Things You Can Only Experience In Kerala, Nowhere Else In The World:

  1. Kerala
  2. Alappuzha (Alleppey) (Kerala)
  3. Thekkady(Periyar) (Kerala)
  4. Kumarakom (Kerala)

Day 1. Ayurvedic Vaidyas

Kerala has seen ayurvedic healers for hundreds of years in India. Ayurveda has survived various invasions but the science has only spread across the world.
HolidayIQ Traveller R.S. Meena shares, "We visited Somatheeram Ayurvedic Beach Resort in Kovalam. It has many ayurveda facilities. But the rate is very high during peak seasons. The view from hotel is very good."

Day 2. Boat Races

Vallamkali or Boat Races are held in August along the Kerala backwaters. Fierce Vallom Kallies (boat races) and water carnivals that are a dramatic spectacle attract tens of thousands of people every year. Flowing through the village of Champakulam, 15 km near Alleppey, the Pamba River is one of the most important rivers in Kerala. It is here where the famous Champakulam Moolam Boat Race is held every year. Tourists and locals throng the village to watch the elaborately decorated 'chundans' or snake boats gliding down the waters at an incredible speed. Tourists are not expected to buy tickets but reach the venue early to secure a place on the riverbank.

Day 3. Vishu - Malayali New Year

Vishu - Malayali New Yearsource: touradvisers.wordpress.com

Malayalis have a dramatic way of celebrating Vishu, rather, a very tasty way. Various sweet dishes made from coconut and jaggery. Celebrated between April and May, it is considered propitious to plan good things on this day for year round good fortune. HolidayIQ Traveller Navmia Jyoti shares, "We went to Kerala for our New Year celebrations. The tour began with our train journey, which we boarded from Bangalore to Cochin. The train journey was excellent, the train was timely, though it was an 11 hour long journey, we had lot of fun as the whole route is very scenic. After we reached Cochin, we already had the booking in Nyle Plaza Hotel, we started our tour of cochin with a visit to synaegogue, which is a jewish temple and the market around it was quite fascinating. Lot of local handicrafts and knick-knacks are available. We went to a museum then called 'Dutch House' which has a history of Kochi and its rulers. Next we saw chinese fishing net on a beach, which was something different. overall Kochi was good but what sucks about Kochi is the 'Traffic'. It moves with a snail's speed. It took us 3 hours to reach Alleppey , which is just 64 Kms away from Kochi.  Alleppey is a wonderful place, a must see for all Indians. It is an experience, the backwaters, so tranquil and serene, it is the best place to take a swim or just laze around with a book. Beautiful Place, a true piece of God's own country!(if you are an adventure traveller, you might not like Alleppey then, as it offers mainly back waters with no adventure sports)."

Day 4. The Calm & Serene Backwaters

The calm and serene gift of nature - the backwaters, can be experienced only in Kerala. No other place in India offers an opportunity to lose yourself shallow water forests with such rich flora and fauna. HolidayIQ Traveller Jit Biswas shares, “On my trip to Kerala, I travelled to Trivandrum, Kochi & Alleppey. I had the most beautiful travel experience in the backwaters of Alleppey. The sea food here is a must-try.”

It was indeed a experience of lifetime. Hats off to all the performer's. Must see attraction and No. 1 in Thekkady no doubt."

This Onam special makes everyone look forward to the festival even more! Sadya is the traditional vegetarian feast of Keralites. Commonly served as lunch, especially on Onam, the preparation consists of boiled pink rice, side dishes, savouries, pickles and desserts spread out on a plantain leaf. Other dishes like Mango Pachadi, Avial, Mathi Meen Curry, Puttu and Kadala are delicious to say the least.

Spending a night in a houseboat is an experience that can’t be replaced by anything else. HolidayIQ Traveller Aravindan S shares, “Enjoy the sway motion of the boat, the cool breeze the bright sun and the exotic scenery it offers. If you got a DSLR camera capture your loved ones with those lovely backgrounds. My friend is getting married and hence the wolf pack wanted a party, the perfect destination is the alleppey back waters. We reached Alleppey by train and reached the nedumudy jetty by 10:00 am. We met our contact and After a bargain we got a 3 bedroom boat house for Rs. 9000 Lunch dinner snacks and breakfast included. Just before 11:00 am. We are aboard and offered a welcome drink. By 12:00 hrs we left the jetty. Cruising through the backwater passing through the church Thathampally lake and other places. We stopped and went out for photo at places. Our boat came back to jetty by 6:00 pm. We are told that cruising is prohibited after evening for fishing activities (but I could not find such rules on govt. Cruising websites). We anchored till morning 07:00 am and again the cruise started for sightseeing and by 09:30 am we are back to jetty and the cruise ended.”
