Your journey begins at what is believed to be the origin of the River Periyar, Periyar Tiger Reserve. The Mullaperiyar dam on the Periyar is "surrounded by hills, wild animals and deep forest. We saw wild dogs, sambars, bison and elephant as we took early morning boat safari." says HolidayIQ reviewer Priyanka.

90 km from the tiger reserve is Idukki's landmark hydro electrical project, the Idukki Arch dam. The site is "located in the lively and beautiful hills of Idukki and the architecture is mind-boggling" says HolidayIQ reviewer Raj. Traversing the Periyar for 90 km from Idukki, you reach the avifauna heaven, the Thattekad Bird Sanctuary. 15km from Thattekad is the place where the Periyar finally flows into Kerala's coastal fertile plains at Bhoothathankettu dam. HolidayIQ reviewer Joji says, "the dam is used for irrigation purposes and the reservoir has facilities for boating. During the boat journey through the tranquil water in the reservoir, we can see the reserve forests"

80 km from the Bhoothathankettu Dam, the Periyar merges with the Arabian Sea at Munabam. An important fishing port and close to Kochi, it is easy to forget the epic journey of the river to reach it's delta.
