Goa is just a 11 hours drive from Mumbai, so whenever you get a long weekend, you can take off for this brilliant road journey, the distance is just around 600 km. We took the NH4 route I. E Mumbai - Pune Expressway - Satara - Kolhapur - Goa this route is a bit longer than the other old route but safer. The Mumbai to Goa road trip can be considered as one of the best road trips in the country where you can experience immense scenic beauty. We took a mid break for lunch and then headed straight to Goa. The best season to visit Goa is from November to January lovely weather and Goa is buzzing with mainly european tourist. To sum up it was worth the drive taken. Though a bit tiring.
We travelled from Mumbai to Goa via Pune, Kolhapur, Amboli, Sawantwadi. The route is pretty good and overall journey was around 600 km. If you have your private car then it should not take you more than 10 hours with some short intervals.
Suppose, if you start early in the morning at around 7 am from Mumbai, then you should reach Goa by early evening. So, I don't think there would be any need for a long halt. But still if you plan for one, I will suggest you to stay at Kolhapur, as there are many good hotels and restaurants nearby. In your leisure time you can plan a visit to a temple or a lake in the evening.
You can again start your journey for Goa via Nipani, Sankeshwar, Gadhinglaj , Ajara, Amboli, Sawantwadi and then Goa. Most part of your journey would be via NH-4 and then AH-47 from Kolhapur, followed by some small but good roads.
1) Try not to start your journey at night, as driving at night through some of the ghats can be very challenging. 2) A person who is totally vegetarian can't be too choosy as the options would be limited. Non-vegetarian person would really love the food though. 3) Make sure that your car is up to date as the journey is long and you would not want to be stranded in the middle of nowhere.
Drive from Mumbai to Goa is nearly 12 hours, which is pretty comfortable obviously depending on your company and the car you are travelling in. One can cover this distance of about 600 km. Easily by taking two stops. One should leave at 6.00 am from Mumbai to reach there by 6.00 pm. A good place for breakfast is Hotel Ruchi Park at Wai, which is about 3.5 hours from Mumbai. The roads are great and you can easily drive at 150 km/hr. There are not too many eateries and coffee shops on the highway so if you need your dose of coffee, do stop at the first CCD you come across.
Road trip with family was superb. It was fun being in with Mumbai Pune Express way and once we crossed Pune. We took Pune Bangalore Highway NH-4. NH-4 is also very good 4 lane road. Ghats after Sawantwadi to Goa is too bad in terms of the road condition. But its fun driving down to Gao.
