Most famous for Kali Temple

Champaner is easily accessible from Vadodara. An hour journey by bus. Though the place is mostly famous for the famous Kali temple at Pavagadh but there are numerous historical spots around which are collectively termed as Champaner-Pavagadh archaeological park. Nagina Masjid, Shehar Ki Masjid, Mandvi, Kamani Masjid & Jami Masjid to name a few. Though all the places can be explored on foot but I suggest hiring an auto ( shall charge you around 250 ) if you to save time & effort. Weather is extreme in summer so better to carry caps & sunscreen.

World Heritage Site has all that can fill your Leisure Day

Drive 45 kms on a smooth toll road to Halol from Cultural Hub The Banyan City of Vadodara Central Gujarat. Leave the road for Right turn at a Circle allowing you to go to Pawagadh Hill bypass rather than enter the Town of Halol. On your left turn here you can drive to Godhra or turn left ahead to drive onto bypass which leaves Champaner Pavagadh behind for drive to Shivrajpur Jambughoda and Bodeli along the lake overseeing the Pavagadh hill 800 meters. There are no other elevations here so sudden glimpse of this Hill attraction grips you as one drives on the toll road too.

You come to arched gate after a right turn from the bypass. See on your right is a a storey high dome structure along a water body. Just before this on your left a path goes to spiral water tank or a Vav and ek minar ki Masjid worh seeing. Then the Dome. One who wants to do bird watching or trek to source of Vishwamitri river along its bed can stop here and enter the Greens follow the small lake till you reach a height which is a water fall in monsoons. Turning right within sucks you into Jungle of deciduous forest typical of this area for a forest experience we in Vadodara give to our children. OK you have done this, then you enter the Fortifications of the old heritage city of Champaner at the base of the Hill of Pavagadh. You can drive through it and enjoy its sites masjids and come out of the gate at the other side to see the Imposing Jami Masjid. Furthur drive on the small road leads you to Bada talav on the bank of which is another impressive fade in ruins which is popular sitting place. There is a jutting into lake Jharokha a sitting window overlooking the Hill over the Lake from its northern side.

The drive on the hill leads you to Machi a flat grounds from where one treks up or catches rope-way to the Top, well almost. Before the Manchi flats you have Khapra Zaveri no Mahal imposing gate fade you just walk up-to, turn right till you reach a valley looking ruins. All these are poetic after the rains. From here if you turn left walk trek up-to waterfall of Vishamitri river, Come out walk ahead to see Saat Kamaan seven arches of stone on ledge of the hill which gives a unique character to this heritage site. Up on a rope-way in monsoons clouds gather around you to impose some romantic ideas to hard core wooden faces too! If you select to trek then many ruins have stories to tell. Up above you will see Doodhiya talav lake over which the second elevation of Kali temple hill juts up. Within and around lake you can see many jain temples and One Shiva temple in ruins. Walk up to next level to see another lake Chasiya talav which leads you to actual climb to reach Kali mata temple a millennium old. Better plan your trip and see that you do not reach on Tuesdays or Some festival devi days! Once on top there are many place corners of the Hilltop you can explore. Astronomy club always comes here to watch stars or some astral phenomenon, comets etc. Trekkers and Climbers use this Hill to train for rock and mountain climbing training from all sides. There are so many things to do around this Hill apart from heritage that for many like us it fills our calendar of leisure break at this single spot! You go and find out more..

Further there are stays at Bhammaria behind the Hill Rest House at Manchii flats and further at Jmabughoda palace and forests road apart from religious rest houses of jains temples etc.

Outstanding destination

The best thing here is the Rope-Way (Gondola) which can help you reach on top of the Hill in just 6 minutes. It goes right through the clouds and the view from the rope way is stunning & breathtaking. This is a religious place having a lot of pilgrims visit daily to get the blessings of devi maa mahakali. A perfect day out destination for religious people.

Overall an awesome trip!

Overall experience was good. Once have to visit. Visit in winter session. One day trip u can do from Ahmedabad or baroda. On top of the hill u can go by either ropeway or steps. So many stationary and fast food stalls were there on hill. We enjoyed a lot in ropeway ride. Try it once, it's comfortable also to reach on top near to mahakali temple.

A world heritage site

Well-maintained world heritage site, perfect picnic spot for family. Lots of historical buildings and mosque to be seen. Champaner was capital of old Gujarat and was once established by begda sultans. Make sure you carry plenty of water as its an open sunny area and you need to get some snacks on your own.

History and religion with some great views thrown in

Champaner – Pavagadh is one of the lesser known World Heritage sites in India. The ruins of Chamapner, located at the foot of the Pavagadh Hills, encompass a fairly varied period in history – from the Rajput rulers of the 8h century to the Muslim kings of the 15th century. Consequently its architecture is quite unique and is one of the best examples of non-Mughal Islamic architecture, influenced by the prevelant Hindu style. Atop Pavagadh hill is the famous Kalikata Mata temple. In addition there are Jain temples and dharmsalas, making it a popular pilgrimage for the locals, but largely undiscovered by outsiders.

Food, sight-seeing and shopping: There are two main focal points – (a) The ruins of Champaner. Similar to Hampi, these are scattered over a large area. There is a large fortress wall near the main bus stand. Inside of it is the well preserved Shahar ki Masji. Further down is the star attraction, the intricately patterned Jami Masjid. Other sundry locations include a Pleasure Pavilion with a stunning view of a lake, Saat Kamaan on the way to the Kalika Temple and Nagina Masjid. (b) Kalika Mata temple on Pavagadh hill. This has more religious significance than architectural beauty. There is a cable car from halfway up the hill to the top. Alternatively there is a walk from the cable car point up nearly 1500 steps past colourful roadside shops hawking juices, water and multiple religious items. The views are stunning on the walk.

Activities & things to do: The walk up Pavagadh can be tiring, so best done first thing in the morning. Take a meal break atop Pavagadh hill at one of the many small, roadside restaurants that serve hot fast food.

Champaner’s ruins ideally require a guide. Check with the clerks at the ticket counter for references but don’t be surprised if you don’t find any. Apparently the enterprising local population believes more in commerce than history to earn its living.

Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc: The site is 47 kms from Vadodara, a key town in Gujarat accessible by air, rail and road, with plenty of hotel options. This can be done as a day trip from Vadodara by taking local buses (via Halol) or hiring a car. If one is keen on heritage sites and monuments a better option would be to plan a night stay at Champaner. Only private vehicles, local buses and shared taxis are allowed up to the cable car point on Pavagadh Hill. Locate a shared taxi, try not to gasp at the number of bodies being stuffed into one vehicle and do the short fifteen minute ride up at a very reasonable ten rupees per head.
