Thrilling wilderness with a pinch of spirituality

"For those who don't know Chopta, it's a hidden village in the middle of Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary where electricity was yet to reach when I visited. A cherry on top is the small trek starting from Chopta leading to the World's Highest Shiva Temple - Tungnath and a further ahead to Chandrashila where you can have a panoramic view of Nanda Devi peak on a clear sky day. A divine place ideal for nature lovers and bird watchers, talking about which, I spotted a Monal bird during my visit which is a rare sight," shares HolidayIQ reviewer Madhur Sharma.

HolidayIQ reviewer Pallavi Sameer shares, "If you love nature then you will definitely love this place. Go and enjoy nature with your camera, tracksuit and sports shoes of good quality. Carry some biscuits etc for the trek."

HolidayIQ Reviewer Kavita Sahgal shares, “Unwind yourself at Chopta...This place is located few hours ahead of Rudraprayag. The roads here are in very good condition but you will cross many landslide prone areas. So be very careful while driving. Chopta falls under the Kedarnath Forest area so the facilities here are minimal. ...from 6 pm onwards) there was nothing to do there!!! So we sat next to the campfire, watched the stars, played music on our guitar, discussed random things and then at 7.30 pm, we again had nothing to do. We sat silently staring the stars, seeing their reflection on the small stream of water in front of us and having a calm nice evening. ”

The very essence of wilderness with a pinch of spirituality

I visited this secluded village in the month of October with a fellow biker. We finalized this as the first landmark of our itinerary and we could not have made a better decision.

For those who don't know Chopta, it's a hidden village in the middle of Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary where electricity was yet to reach when I visited. Cherry on top is the small trek starting from Chopta leading to the World's Highest Shiva Temple - Tungnath and a further ahead to Chandrashila where you can have a panoramic view of Nanda Devi peak on a clear sky day.

A divine place ideal for nature lovers and bird watchers, talking about which, I spotted a Monal bird during my visit which is a rare sight. You can spend a lazy day amidst the green meadows or feast the photographer in you with the delightful sights around.

Will definitely go back in winters, post snowfall, to experience the white side of the place. :)

Chopta Tungnath Winter Trek!

We were a group of 7 friends who decided to venture on this trip in January amidst the peak winter. We started our journey from Rishikesh at 6. 30 am on 23rd January in an 8 seater Innova which we booked in advance for 3 days for Rs. 9000. It is advisable to take medication for motion sickness for those who suffer from it.

We reached Sari village at 3. 30 pm after stopping a considerable number of times on the way. The trek from Sari to Deoria tal (also known as Devariya tal) is of 2. 3 km which we covered in 2 hours. During the trek, we witnesses the moon rise from behind the mountains and it was spectacular. For our night stay by the lake in tents, we had done our booking in advance with Mr Negi for Rs 600 per person. He is a very friendly and helpful man. After providing us with soup and sumptuous dinner by the bonfire, he provided us with sleeping bags and blankets for the night. The sleeping bags were very smelly.

Hence, we did not use them. It gets really cold at night. Adequate protection must be taken to beat it. 5 of us huddled and slept in one tent due to the cold. There is no electricity in this place so one must carry his or her own torch. Also, there are no washrooms around. So for all practical purposes, you can go ahead with your nature calls behind any visible bush. The place is very calm but for the sound of leopards heard occasionally when they are roaming nearby in the middle of the night. It is fairly common to have them around at that time. We were expecting to see a lot of snow in that area as seen in the previous years. But there was not much snow this time as the winter wasn't that cold. We were disappointed. Before planning any trip to such places in winter, it should be made a point to find out from the local people about the scenario at that point of time.

We spent most of our night talking and having fun. Watching the reflection of peaks slowly turn yellow in the lake water as the sun rises early in the morning is an amazing experience that one must not miss. We had breakfast and trekked down. Due to the not so severe winter, the road to Chopta was completely motorable and the trek till Chandrashila peak was possible. We reached Chopta in 1 hour and started our trek to Tungnath at 1pm. It is always advisable to reach Chopta and start the trek early in the day. Due to shortage of time, unfortunately, we could not trek till Chandrashila as we had to descend down before it got dark. The trek was enjoyable but very tiring. The view from Tungnath was beautiful. The sun was casting its rays over the mountain slopes covered entirely with snow. The view made sure that the trek was definitely worth the effort.

Descending was very easy and we covered half the path by sliding on the snow. It was a lot of fun. Food and water has to be carried as there are no shops on the way during winter. Snow boots are required in winter in order to trek. The permits we had taken at Deoria tal at a cost of Rs. 75 per head in order to trek were not checked. We came down by 6. 30 pm and started for Ukhimath where we stayed in the GMVN guesthouse. Their room charges ranged from Rs. 550 to 700. The stay was comfortable. Next morning, we visited the Omkareshwar temple which houses the Kedarnath idol in winters. We started back for Rishikesh at 10am and reached at 4pm stopping at the Dhari devi temple in between. The whole trip costed about Rs. 3000 per head. It has been a very memorable trip with some wonderful experiences.

Chopta Overview

Chopta is a beautiful village in the Rudraprayag district of the state of Uttarakhand. It is situated on the Chandra Parbat and is known for its virgin beauty and scenic landscape. The quaint hamlet is famous for its green grassland known locally as ‘bugyals’.

One can get beautiful views of the snow-clad peaks of the Himalayas from here and the alpine forests add to the beauty of the place. Located at an altitude of 2680 meters above sea level, Chopta enjoys a perfect weather almost throughout the year, although it gets quite cold in winter and enjoys snowfall during the peak of winter.

The town is usually the starting point of quite a few treks especially to Panch Kedar due to the close proximity. Tungnath which is the highest peak in the Panch Kedars is a 3.5 km trek from Chopta, and at a further 1.5 km distance away is Chandrashila.

Visitors and Lord Shiva devotees to the famous temple, Tunganath Mandir, pass though Chopta as this is the best starting point for the trek up the mountain which leads to the temple at a distance of 3 km.

Though comparatively unexplored, the scenic village has been gradually gaining importance as a popular tourist destination. Nature lovers and adventure enthusiasts flock to the place as it is a perfect destination for trekking and camping.

The forest here is known for its rich variety of flora and fauna, and is famous for its expanse of rhododendron and deodar trees. Moreover, the place is well connected by motorable road which has helped it gain popularity in recent years as a tourist destination.

There are quite a few places near Chopta which are popular tourist destinations as well. The picturesque town of Gopeshwar is at a distance of 39 km from Chopta, while the Kanchula Korak Musk Deer Sanctuary which is a perfect place to witness the wildlife of the region is around 7 km from here. The town of Ukhimath known as the winter seat of Lord Kedarnath is at a distance of 31 km from Chopta.

The best time to visit the place is during the months of April to June when the whole area looks lush green and the weather is perfect for exploration. The harsh chill of the winter disappears during this time making it ideal for a holiday or a nature expedition.
