Forget the itinerary and just go talk to locals to get details about the not-so-well-known destinations in the vicinity. Most guidebooks just suggest popular destinations and ignore the offbeat ones.

Gorgeous Gandikota

It an absolute awe inspiring place, The Fort is massive and very well maintained. Steep steps but quite safe. Wear proper shoes, hat, lot of sunscreen becos even in January it was very hot. The Temple is very beautiful. And The Gorge. Simply breathtaking. When I was told it is a mini Grand Canyon. Was a bit sceptical, but Oh boy! It is truly awesome. What a view. But beware if rocky terrain. The walk/trek is well worth it but one needs to be very careful. No safety regulations, no first Aid No food nothing available. Carry your own food, water.

Single Frame - FORT, CANYON, TEMPLE, MOSQUE

Gandikota is a small village located in the Kadapa District of Andhra Pradesh. Situated on the banks of River Pennar.

Distance between Bangalore and Gandikota is around 288 Km, which makes it a perfect destination for weekends.

Let check the places to visit here:-

1. Madhavaraya temple.

2. Jamma masjid.

3. Granary.

4. Ranganatha swamy temple.

5. Fort entrance.

6. Jail.

7. Gandikota fort view point.

The fort has many part as mentioned above :-

The Fort Entrance is great and it shows the strategic thought they had. It is zig-zag, so by the time enemy cross the entranced they will be destroyed. We can see holes in the different parts of the high walls of this entrance which was probably to attack, in case some intruders were found.

The jail seems to be small from outside.

Jumma Masjid looks great and is a copy of Charminar.

Temple looks ruined but still the intricate details on the pillars exists.

Now coming to the main place, THE VIEW POINT I. E the Canyon --- For the view, we have to stroll some time in the rocky ruins/hills. We were here for the sun-rise and yes it was a mesmerizing sight. Every thing in one frame; Sun, Canyon, river below.

This fort has no entry fee and you won't see large crowd here, just few people that's it. It will take around 2-2:30 Hours.

Seems this is not part of ASI, didn't saw any boards.

Fort is located in a remote area so the transportation is a problem. So make sure you plan accordingly.

Also there is ONLY ONE(run by APSRTC) food and lodging facility near the Fort, which needs to be booked in advance or you have to carry a tent.

Gandikota Overview

Gandikota is a small village located in the Kadapa District of Andhra Pradesh. Situated on the banks of River Pennar, Gandikota is named after a nearby fort by the same name. The fort of Gandikota is situated on the edge of a gorge, between hills of the Erramala Range and is hence named so, Gandi meaning gorge and Kota meaning fort in Telugu.

Gandikota is said to have been built in the 12th century AD and is said to have been a fairly important location during the Chalukya, Vijayanagara, Qutub Shahi and British reigns. The fort is protected by an 8 km long perimeter wall, making it one of the largest forts in India and is also additionally protected from 3 sides by the gorge, making it very well secured.

Within the fort are a few temples, a granary, a masjid, a palace and a few more structures. The temples are particularly known for their architecture, composed of many fine sculptures and carvings in the Vijayanagara style.

The many viewpoints in the fort afford panoramic views of the surrounding hill forests, plateaus, the gorge and the Pennar River flowing through it. The nearby village of Kottapalle offers good views of the fort and its surroundings as well.

The nearest major bus and railway stations are at Kadapa, about 80 km away. Once in Kadapa, one can find local buses and taxis to reach Gandikota. The nearest international airport is at Bangalore, about 280 km away. The best time to visit Gandikota is between August and February.
