A city in existence from 2 millennia

Junnar is a city which was a major city in Satvahana reign which ruled the Northern Deccan from 250 BC to about 200 AD. Junnar, (Jirnanagar as it was known then, was first major city on the Kokan- Capital of Satvahana Empire) route . . Junnar is situated on Pune-Nagar Road and can be reached easily from Mumbai, Pune and major cities in Maharashtra. There are plenty of State Transport buses available . The town is situated in the shadow of a hill fort of Shivneri- The birthplace of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. There are many forts like Hadsar, Chavand, Jivdhan etc in the vicinity of Junnar. The famous pass of Naneghat is also nearby. This area is very well known in trekkers' circuits of Maharashtra . Lenyadri and Ozar are two of the Ashtvinayaks which are very close to Junnar . The VLA Radio telescope at Khodad is also nearby . So it is a place which is very appealing to history buffs and adventure lovers . There are many lodges available for stay. You won't find many of them listed online. But since it is a town which is not that well known for holidays, you won't find it difficult to get rooms . You don't want to miss out the Misal Pav at Shree Data Guru Snacks opposite New ST stand.

Very Good

Junnar is a city with thousands of years of history in the Pune district of the Indian state of Maharashtra. Surroundings of Junnar are very rich with ancient cave temples. In total there are more than 200 individual rock-cut caves located in four hills around Junnar.

Junnar Overview

Located in the Pune district of Maharashtra, Junnar is the headquarters of Junnar taluka. This historic city is located near Shivneri Fort, which is famous as the birthplace of Chhatrapati Shivaji Raje Bhosle, the popular Maratha king. Located in the backdrop of the Sahyadri Mountains at an elevation of 2260 feet, this city is surrounded by beautiful mountains.

Originally known as Jirna Nagar, the city served as the capital of King Nahapan from the Shak Dynasty. Satakarni, who was a Satavahana king, captured the region by defeating the Shak ruler. During this time, the Shivneri Fort was built to keep a watch on Naneghat, which was the commercial route.

Additionally, at this time more than 100 caves were carved out in the mountains near the city. After the Satavahanas, this fort was ruled by the Shilaharas, the Yadavas and the Bahamanis.

Shivneri Fort was granted to Maloji Bhosle in 1599 AD and from him the fort passed to Shivaji. However, Maharaj Shivaji had to leave the fort in 1632, which was captured by the Mughals.

Later in 1650, the local fishermen revolted against the Mughal rulers and were assassinated in the fort. In 1678, the Marathas’ attempt to capture Shivneri fort went in vain. Forty years later, Shahu Maharaj took control over the fort, which was later passed on to the Peshwas.

Today, the region is inhabited by 24,740 people, most of whom are engaged in making handmade paper and woollens. The town is famous for its Ganesh decorations during the Ganesh festival. Other major attractions of Junnar are the 200 individual rock-cut caves that are located in four hills around the area.

The city is also popular as a home to the largest density of leopard population within a 500 sq km area. Junnar is also known for Belhe Market, which is famous for ox and goat marketing.

Located around 69 km away from the centre of Junnar, Pune International Airport is the main gateway to the destination. The airport serves flights from Indian destinations like Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Chennai, Coimbatore and Delhi, among others.

Dubai and Frankfurt are the international destinations connected to this airport. Pune Railway Station on the Mumbai - Chennai railway line is the closest railway station that can be used to reach the destination.

Junnar Bus Station is the main bus station serving the city. This station is served by the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation buses from Pune, Ghod and other nearby places. The best time to visit Junnar is during the winter season, which extends from December to February.
