The Spirituality of Kedarnath

Kedarnath a place right in the lap of nature, extremely beautiful and cold. The Kedarnath temple is open only in limited seasons. The doors of temple are closed on the next day of Diwali.

Sriinivas suggests staying in the camps here: A unique type where the hotel stay was like camp resorts. Kids had a blast, we went for religious trip but the kids really enjoyed the stay in the hotel.

Land of natural beauty and peace

Amarnath is a holy pilgrim of hindu religion. It is a amazing place to visit. It is one of the famous Devine destination of char dham yatra. We are visited this place in the month of October. If any one plan to visit it, check the opening and closing time through internet, after that plan accordingly. Dehradun is a nearest airport, and Rishikesh is nearest railway station. Distance from Dehradun / Rishikesh to kedarnath is about 250 km. It took 6 to 7 hrs journey. People take private taxi or UTC(uttarakhand transport corporation) bus from dehradun/rishikesh, private taxi is better option. If any one want to visit kedarnath he should also include badrinath both place is covered within 3 to 4 days. Taxy operator told us it take 5 days for visiting both place but we covered both place in three day. Day one - Dehradun to kedarnath, Day two - early morning visit to kedarnath temple and afternoon go to badrinath we reached badrinath at evening. Day three visit to badrinath and proceed returned return back to Dehradun at afternoon. It is possible with helicopter service otherwise it take 4 days to cover both place helicopter service is available in kedarnath. Don't book earlier if you visit in off season otherwise advanced booking is needed. Kedarnath temple located in wonderful foothills we saw a beautiful scenic view around the temple. It was amazing experience for me.

Kedarnath Overview

Kedarnath is a pilgrimage centre located in Uttarakhand, India. It lies at a height of 3584 m above sea level and is one of the ‘char dhams’ identified by Hinduism as the most religious places. It is also the remotest and the hardest to reach dham of all the four places.

The place remains active only six months in a year during the summer months. It receives heavy snowfall during the winter months which makes it uninhabitable. The residents of Kedarnath shift to villages lying at lower altitudes during the winter months while Lord Kedarnath’s Palki is transferred to Ukhimath.

Kedarnath is named after King Kedar, who occupies a place in mythology. According to a mythological account, King Kedar ruled the present day Kedarnath during the Satyuga period. He had a daughter named Vrinda, who was Goddess Lakshmi’s human incarnation. Vrinda is supposed to have lived an ascetic life for 60000 years, praying to the Lord all the while. Vrindavan is named in honour of her.

However, the temple of Kedarnath is supposed to date back to the period of the Mahabharata. The Kedarnath Temple opens in the month of April-May every year and remains open till November, when winter sets in.

Kedarnath is the least accessible of all the four dhams. It’s a 14 km steep climb to the temple of Kedarnath and can be done on foot or on ponies. Ponies or horses are available on rent from Gaurikund. Other than foot, the journey of Kedarnath can also be made via a helicopter. Many private operators offer helicopter services in Kedarnath.
