Nice place with many traditional buildings, modern architectural buildings and buildings of religious architecture like temples and churches. There was no prepaid auto service from railway station so the autos were found charging more than the double. The cop posted at the exit of railway station was found helpless in front of the fleecing autos and the ones who were found refusing trips on flimsy grounds or were found bargaining for the maximum rates.

Awesome place

Kottayam is known as the City of Alphabets (Akshara Nagari ). Even today many dailies like Malayala Manorama, Mangalam are based here. Lots of places to see like the surreal Backwaters which are really memorable. Aruvikkuzhi waterfalls is also a very good place to go. Cost wise it is moderate as you can get cheap hotels to stay & the local cuisine is also delicious. One advice when you visit Kottayam or any place in Kerala is that 'DON'T FORGET YOUR UMBRELLA!!! ' As you may never know when the next downpour will come.

Kottayam, Kerala

Kottayam, Kerala is very good city. Mainly railway gateway to Sabarimala. Mostly Pilgrims choose Kottayam to go to Sabarimala. Kottayam surrounded by many auspicious temples nearby around the city. For tourists better not plan during December and January mid. This period heavy crowd of pilgrims towards Sabarimala occupy trains and most of the Accomaditon's. Of course with good preparations you can manage well. City so nice for fresh fruit juices. Food is good. As usual Kerala traditional attractions are well. Clean town all kind of harmonizing city. It's not too modern and not too orthodox.

Kottayam places

Beautiful and very poetic place of Kottayam
And also best tourist centre
Kottayam is a hidden paradise. Known mainly for its spice market, this merchant town has been seeing an increasing amount of tourist traffic due to its proximity to Thekkady and the splendid Periyar Tiger Reserve, popular tourist destinations just 6 kms from here. Experience an old, forgotten way of life in the quaint markets and vast, fertile plantations. Taste some of the most tantalising cuisines and imbibe the rich cultural heritage of Kerala.
Indulge in the luxury of a rejuvenating Ayurvedic massage, one of the best you'll ever get. Kumily offers you a perfect, quiet holiday away from the hustle bustle of city life in the midst of peace and serenity.

A place with awesome greenery!

Kottayam is my home town, but I stayed in other cities/states most of the time due to work, studies and all. Now I am back in Kottayam and I totally admire it's beauty. Kottayam has changed a lot and is still developing day by day. Must visit places are Backwaters - Kumarakom if you love a peaceful water life. Kottayam is full of greenery, fields and is a great place to stay. If you are looking out about city life then visit Kanjikuzhy in the town. That is the happening place in Kottayam town where you can go Shopping, Diners and all. Numerous Churches, temples and Mosques are situated in and around the town. Currently working on roads renovation so you might feel bit uncomfortable while driving, but it's a temporary issue. Kottayam is well connected by trains and buses. Nearest Airport is at Cochin which is around 70kms drive. There is a farm in a place called Neendur where you can take your kids to have a great time. They have Rabbits, goats, Emus, Ducks, Fishes to name a few and lot of play area.

Kottayam is well known as the Land of Letters and Latex. Lot of publications are situated here. If you are looking doe authentic Kerala style food then I recommend to visit a local Shaap (small and big Local hotels).

A must see place

This is my spouses home town. So nothing much to tell about (as a traveller). Thekkady is a must see place for people who love thick green places and forests. Kumarakom and lots of other places are nearby to experience the lake experience. Boating is also definitely recommended. You can also have a short trip on public transport boats. Shopping has to be planned and you have to know the place. Do not shop on sundays as 95% shops will be closed.
