Reasons to go to Malpe

1A nice beach for watersports
A nice beach for watersports

HolidayIQ Reviewer Prashant Shitole adds, “Nice beach with some water activities We went on a pretty long weekend. The beach was overcrowded may be due to holiday connected with weekends. Parking is quite good and sufficient though. There are many food stalls (fish fry especially) and restrooms for having the bath after some play around and some water activities. There are boats taking you to the islands see from beach, parasailing and other adventures which are little expensive compared to other beaches I visited so far (maybe since it's just team that operates this). Overall, good arrangement for tourists on a beach including life savers keeping a close look on all. Location wise the beach is hardly 2-3 km from the main highway. Cheers!”

It is believed that the island was discovered by Vasco da Gama in 1498, who named it as El Padron de Santa Maria. The island has vertical volcanic rock formations of different sizes. Ferries are available from the port of Malpe to reach St. Mary's Island. HoliayIQ traveller Sreejesh says, "This island is few kilometers away from Malpe beach in Udupi, Karnataka. There is a boat service which costs Rs. 200 to get there and return on the same boat with a one hour halt. The place has great view of the Arabian Sea. The west side of the beach is filled with sea shells instead of sand, so the water is crystal clear. East side is more deep and has black pebble stones and sand."

Sunset at maple beach

It takes around 4 hours to reach make beach from Shimoga. We set out for it last weekend. Started in the noon almost and reach there at the right time around 4:30 pm. The beach is crowded at this time but it's huge to accommodate so many people. You can enjoy the waves until the sunset and then sit at the beach to taste some fish delicacies. Carry a pair of clothes. There definitely is a shower room. You will find some water sports as well. St Mary's island is another attraction. It's a day long trip. There is a resort right infront of the beach but im sure that needs advance booking. There are some good hotels as well little away from the beach. Good place for a day trip. We usually cover in a day from Shimoga and back. Have fun. Happy holidays !!

Excellent place to visit

Have different options to spend time. Different options for food. There is an island destination which is a must watch. Different boat rides and para sailing banana rides etc. It is little hotter in afternoon but still a worth full place to visit. There are resorts available to stay which are just opposite to beach.

Malpe Overview

Malpe is one of the natural ports located at about six kilometers to the west of Udupi, in the state of Karnataka, India. The place is a famous port town and fishing harbor on the Karnataka coast. At the mouth of the Udyavara river, marks the beginning of this small scenic place Malpe.

The suburban city Udupi is administered by Udupi City Municipality. There is mainly three languages spoken here Tulu, Kannada and Konkani. This picturesque beach is the prime attraction of the port, Malpe. It is popular among both locals and tourists and is generally crowded.

St. Mary's Islands is one of the main attractions at Malpe, with its pristine secluded beach. People can also take a boat ride to St Mary's Island for some fascinating volcanic rock formations. Malpe is formed by a unique formation of volcanic rocks which are vertical hexagonal rocks. It is a big collection of islands found in different sizes. It is therefore called a beach flanked by Islands.

Malpe also contributes to the religious importance as the Balarama and Ananteshwara temples attract devotees. Basavappa Nayaka of Bidanur built a fort on the island of Daria-Bahadurgad on the off shores of Malpe.

There are many shrines in the name of many Gods. The port has a never ending stretch of soft sand, untouched by the commercialization with three rocky islands adjoining its western part. Daria-Bahadurgad, on the northern most ends, Daria-Gadara-Kallu in the middle and Kari Illada Kallu in the southern most part are the three islands. The main industry of Malpe is the fishing industry and tile manufacturing which contributes in the economy of the country.

To the south of Malpe lies the ideal picnic spot called Virgin Beach. Many pilgrims come to offer prayers at the temple of Vadabhandeshwara which enshrines the idol of Balarama, established by Sri Madhwacharya. The place also offers the visitors an island on the western side all made up of rocks.

The amazing view of the place sets up a perfect mood for an unforgettable trip. The place is characterized by silver white sand beach and is secluded from most of the modern areas around. A trip to Malpe is incomplete without a visit to a quite fascinating harbor which is also a ship building centre. The best months to enjoy Malpe are from October to March.
