Coracle Ride

One Sunday morning when we 4 friends had nothing to, we thought of visiting a place nearby to while away a few hours. So, after go ogling for half an hour, we decided on this place Sangama-Mekedattu on the Kanakapura road. It is roughly a 100 kms from Bangalore on the Kanakapura road. There are directions throughout the road and so you would not miss any turns. We reached the place around 10. 30am. The place is pretty decent. There were not much people around even though it was a weekend. We parked the vehicle and walked towards the Sangama River. On both sides of the roads there were stalls, where people were selling fried fishes. After entering we booked a coracle ride and went to the other side of the river, which is a 10 minutes ride. After that we booked a bus for Rs 50 per person and after a back breaking bus ride of 25 mins we reach Mekedattu. This place has huge rocks and there were groups of people playing in the water. It seemed dangerous though . After spending a good one hour, enjoying the nature and clicking a few pictures we left from there, in the same bus which had brought us there . . Time to be spent: 2 hrs max. *You do not have place to change your clothes, so think twice before jumping into the water . *Wear good shoes which have a good grip, its slippery there . *There are places where you can grab a bit or there is a restaurant present there too .

Scenic place, good for a days trip

We went to Mekedatu on a bike trip from Bangalore. It's a 190km drive from Bangalore and good to go during early morning. The place was very beautiful with Scenic surroundings enroute. The place is also referred to as sangama. A small river has to be crossed in order to reach the other side of the bank and take a bus to the hill top where you can witness the wonderful river Kaveri flowing through a deep and narrow gorge. There is a coracle service that helps us cross the river and it starts at about 8- 830AM. There is a bus service to the top with reasonable ticket price. These services are closed after 5-530PM. The bus ride is of about 10 minutes. Upon reaching the top one can reach the rock boulders between where the river flows by foot. There is only one shop here on the top that sells limited items. The place where the coracle service is has a small area full of shops where one can buy snacks and juices to consume while on the hill top. Once on the hill top there is nothing much to do but click more pics, enjoy nature at its best and be careful not to slip from any of the rocks as the river is not too deep, yet flows over a rocky bed and can be fatal.

Good place to visit

It's very near to Bangalore to visit frequently. And it is nice to spend few hours in weekends. And it's cool place and prefer to visit during December month so we can enjoy water .? The river shaping the landscape is another attraction and to get involved in tourists activity like swimming, catching fishes and to make camp beside.

A nice getaway - Best with overnight camping

About 120 km from Bangalore through Kanakpura road is this off beat destination besides the Cauvery river. The river is pretty calm for its size and importance to south India. Few spots are good for bathing. A few kms before mekedatu, is chunchi falls which is quite dry. My advice to enjoy mekedatu to the fullest would be a overnight camping by the river. The sound of water hitting the rocks and making its way across is a must experience while sleeping in the tent. So get your gang, pack your bags and enjoy your tent stay with a bonfire burning the whole night.

Good but best for a night camp

A small offbeat destination located about 120 km from Bangalore. River Cauvery flows through this place but not in its full strength. The place is quite with a small restaurant while serves average food. The best and only way to enjoy this place is night camping. The sound of river water cruising through the rocks is one of its kind. The camping location is about 3 km from the main location . So, nothing must to do but camping experiences can be epic - with your group and a bonfire.

Perfect place for nature lovers

Mekedatu is 5 kilometers from Sangama. Though the place is extremely beautiful with Cauvery water and granite rock formations, the place is fraught with danger . There is a boat and bus to travel from mekedaatu to sangam and vice Versa . . The place is also filled with dangers as there are no bridges and the water is full of under laying currents. But there are no warnings no signboards noting about the risks here . Photos can be taken but from a distance . There are no railings at Mekedaatu which is scary. Trekking and swimming will keep trekkers happy . Take lots of water as there are no restaurants nearby

Awesome destination to spend a night in

The special thing here is the fast flow of water at Mekedaatu and came flow by the same river at Sangam. During night it is very peaceful except the constant sound of the fast flowing river. I would recommend you to visit during November to fully enjoy the place . We played in the river at Sangam whose width is 80m. The water is crystal clear but there are currents at deeper ends. There is only one hotel nearby maintained by the government where the food is average to ssay the least. There are no shops available. Hence carry the thing you like from Kananpura itself . Trekking on the nearby hill and enjoying swimming in the cool water are the things we indulged in. I would recommend you to spend the night for the sunrise and also make sure to carry blankets and water bottles as it can get pretty cold during night.

Beautiful escape from city life!

Mekedatu is a beautiful place near South Bangalore. Its a gorge where a river cuts through the hills making it a scenic place. A journey from Bangalore to Mekedatu will being to you many spectacular views and many beautiful small villages. You can cross the river in a boat at certain places but beware of water currents and crocodiles. There are a few hotels just beside the river which serve you with a hearty meal, roadside fish fry is popular among the people of this place but definitely visit it during the monsoon during early morning between 7-9 where the mist rolls over the lush green scenary. It is about 70-80 kms from Bangalore

Visit for the thrill of playing in fast as well as calm waters

Visit for the water and sceneric beauty. There is not much of hiking and would require a complete day of enjoyment. There are very few buses so use your own vehicle . There are no dhabas in this place. Hence pack your food from home. There is an oppurtunity for rock climbing at Mekedaatu and swimming in water at Sangam . Make sure to carry lots of water and high grip shoes.

  • Awesome view

Mekedatu-Best for a weekend stay

An awesome place to spend the weekend in . The speed and flow of the water amazes and intimidates you. The river shrinks from a bredth of 80m to 9m in a fraction of a few km and the flow is amazing to watch . . But less hotels nearby and have to travel through boat and bus to reach mekedatu from sangam. You can enjoy water in sangam.
