Nagalapuram Trek!

87 Km from Kanchipuram, I started off with a friend of mine on my pulsar 150CC at 7 am in the mildly freezing climate. The highway was clean and Speeder-friendly, so we were able to maintain an average speed of around 85 kmph. Passing through Sri Perambadur and we met our other trek mates at Tiruvalluvar. Had our breakfast at the bus-stop of Nagalapuram (I fortunately got the last plate of pongal, without which, I would have been dead on the trek) and we scored some biscuits and glucose and other high energy stuff for the trek. After around 20 kms of off road biking, we arrived at TP kottai, A temple where the trek starts. We parked our bikes and started the trek. It was fairly simple at first, and we came to the first pool of water after 25 minutes of trek. We were excited, but our aim was the 4th and 5th pools where the water was at-least 10-15 Feet deep and there were cliffs from which we could dive into water. As the day passed, the route got tougher and by the time I reached pool 3, I was almost out of energy as the sun was high up and it was pretty hot. We refreshed with the sweet water at pool 3 and resumed our pursuit to pools 4 and 5. We finally reached it, got into swimming trunks and went for a swim under those small waterfalls. After a hearty swim, we started cliff diving. It was an enthralling experience, and it took quite some time and courage to do my first jump, as it was around 10 feet high. And then, cliff jumping went on for around 3 more hours, and we were totally exhausted. Had some biscuits and glucose, trekked back, with a better guide we found on the way (brownie the dog) and we reached back way faster than we went in. It was an amazing trek, and camping there for a day or two would have been so much better. Its a Great Getaway place for a weekend from Chennai or closely.

Nagalapuram Overview

Nagalapuram is a small town located in the Chittoor District of Andhra Pradesh. Having an altitude of about 64 m above sea level, it is located 70 km south-east of Tirupati. It is home to a temple dedicated to Vedanarayana, a variation of Lord Vishnu and is said to have been built by Krishna Devaraya of Vijayanagar, in the memory of his mother, Nagala Devi, after whom, the town is named.

The special feature of this temple is a festival called Surya Pooja, celebrated annually during the month of March. During this time, one can see the sun rays from the horizon fall from the temple doors into the sanctum, directly at the feet of the resident deity’s idol. The incident is perceived as Lord Surya arriving to worship Lord Vishnu by touching his feet.

This temple is managed by the TTD, which also provides the bus service to this town as well as others under its management, from Tirupati.

A popular nearby tourist destination is Naglapuram Hills, having small waterfall, steep roads and trails that are opportune for trekking. Other nearby tourist destinations are Sriperumbudur, Srikalahasti and Tirupati.

The nearest railway station is located at Vellore (KPD) at a distance of 17.9 km, whereas the closest airport is at Chennai, approximately 66 km away.
