India's best Zoo ever

Let me first tell me something about Nandankanan- Nandankanan Zooligal park is located in Bhubneswar, capital of Odisha . It is spread over area of 400 hectares . It became the first zoo of India to join World Association of Zoo's and Aquarium in the year 2009 . It was established in the year 1960 . I have been there several times before with family and I really liked the place and try to visit every year . It will increase you love for animals and wildlife . Its very good. One can see variety of birds and animals there . You will be speechless to see several species of birds, mammals and reptiles . You can also find various endangered species of animals like Nilgiri languor, mouse deer etc. The best thing. They have is a white tiger . They had started a programme Adopt the Animal where visitors are given a form and they can contribute as low as RS 500 for maintenance of animals . One can reach Bhubaneswar by road, railways or by flight. We live nearly 40 km away from the destination, we travel by a Car and there is no problem in parking . There are several good hotels and lodges in Bhubneswar in affordable range where one can stay if you are from other states . One can hire a Taxi or Autorickshaw to reach the zoo . There are some cafeteria's inside from where one can buy snacks and there is a restaurant where you can eat lunch options are veg and in non veg there is only fish option because they told that they don't serve chicken or mutton because it could attract many animals. So if you are a pure non vegeterian then you can find any hotel outside the zoo A good place to visit specially for small school going kids as they love to see various animals and birds . Additional Review Details. You can travel only in Day time . Duration of Stay is 1 day only. Average Expenditure including zoo safari (less than Rs. 300/day) per individual. There is no group size normally more than twenty. This place is Best Suited For Families. The best Time to Travel is especially winter because in that time you will be relaxed and travell more areas . You can even click the images so that you can reserve your beautiful memories forever . As per my experience If you can visit the place, you should give it a try or you will regret that you have missed something in your life.

Nandankanan Overview

Nandankanan, meaning 'Garden of God', is situated in the upper region of Khurda District. Lying on the embankment of Kanjia Lake, Nandankanan featuring a botanical garden, zoo and a sanctuary is among the famous tourist destinations in Orissa.

Situated along the forests of Krishnanagar, Chandaka and Jujhagarh, Nandankanan is known for its rich reserve of flora and fauna. The region gained fame during the historic soldier revolution (Paika Bidroha) in 1817 against British rule.

The destination is well-known for the Nandankanan Sanctuary that provides shelter to white tigers. The reserve is also one of the initial captive-breeding centres for gharials. There are also varieties of freshwater fish and the reptile park featuring crocodiles, lizards, turtles and snakes. At present, there are 34 tigers in the reserve. In 2009, Nandankanan became the first zoo to join the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA) in India.

Nandankanan Sanctuary provides an opportunity for activities like boating, elephant rides, bird watching, lion safari and white tiger safari. Wildlife enthusiasts can also visit the Zoo Library within the zoo. There is a special section in the library dedicated to endangered species.

Besides, Chandka Elephant Reserve is another notable attraction situated close by. Water reservoirs such as Jhumkas and Deras along with the ancient Shishupalgarh Fort are among the notable picnic spots around Nandankanan.

Khurda District preserves its culture in the form of designing traditional handlooms and attires such as sarees, lungis and napkins. Visitors to the region can also see traditional Odissi and Chhau dance on special occasions.

Bhubaneswar, at a distance of 20 km from Nandankanan, is connected with the rest of the country with all the transportation mediums. The airport of Bhubaneswar is connected with New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Vaizag and other Indian cities. Travellers can reach the railway station of Bhubaneswar from various parts of the country. Nandankanan can be reached by buses, cabs and auto rickshaws from Bhubaneswar and other nearby towns.

The climate remains suitable for sightseeing trips and outings during October to February, which is the ideal time to visit Nandankanan.
