Narkanda

Started my journey from Panchkula to narkanda via Shimla. Faced and number of problems in the journey. As towards Shimla road is under construction ... And there's a jam of 5 and half hours. We started at 10 am. And we crossed Shimla by 5 pm. Then again we faced 8km jam near kufri ... That took our anothr 2. 5 hours. Anyhow we crossed the kufri and actually started towards narkanda ... Beautiful road and amazing views ... We reached at 8. 30. We stayed at Hatu velley homestay. Its 2 km from the main market. Had our dinner and go 2 the bed as we were veryy tired .. And people ovr there told us that after 9pm its dangerous to ho outside ... As there's and number of wild animals used to cm every night ... Next morng wake up veryy early .. Its really cold ovr there .. 7degree temperature was in the morng ... We take our morng tea just outside the room .. Its beautiful. Dens ed jungle was in front of me .. Beautiful views ... At 8 am we take our and moved to Hatu Mata Temple that was 7 km from our homestay. We hire a taxi as temple was at 11000 feet above and its veryy difficult to drive. Temple was veryy beautiful. After that we check out from the and moved towards thanedar. Thanedar's road was not that good ... But views were amazingly beautiful. We saw Apple orchards .. And Cherry Orchards .. Local people are very helping .. We bought cherry boxes ... And we started our journey back to Panchkula. But this time we decided to cm via Chail. We did our lunch at kufri .. And moved towards Chail .. Visited Chail palace at 10 pm we were at Panchkula. It was a very short trip but memorable trip.

Hidden gem less explored but must be

The first name that comes to mind when someone plans for a trip to the hills is Himachal Pradesh. The state which has so much in its basket that one can''t thank it enough for the bounties. I have heard and seen people going to Kasol, Dharamshala, Shimla, Barog, Kasauli and Chandigarh but we decided to travel to a place where not many people like to go or haven''t heard much about. Narkanda --- absolutely stunning journey up to the place. Went there in the monsoons and the rains made the valley greener and stunning. There aren''t much hotels in Narkanda so we stayed at HPTDC hotel, which is fabulous with price, service, food and location. The most attractive part of the place is Hatu peak, more than 11,000 feet above the sea level. The Hatu temple, the valley view, the steep single road drive, and the foggy weather added to the beauty. On our way to the Tanu lake, we saw numerous apple orchards and visited one to buy some. Delicious and juicy waiting to be sorted, packed and sold off to the market. If you are planning to visit Narkanda, do stop over at Kufri and enjoy some adventure activities like we did. We also did a horse ride but it was bad since the locals didn''t inform us about the pathetic road condition, all covered in mud after the rains, and the poor animals had to bear the burden. The ride was dangerous too as one side it was death and the other stones all over the road. You fall, and don''t really know where you land up. Narkanda is a place to relax, absorb the beauty, get romantic and enjoy the drive. Pack some woolens and shoes are a must

Narkanda Overview

Located in the district of Shimla in Himachal Pradesh, Narkanda is a town and a nagar panchayat, situated at an average elevation of 2621 metres. Surrounded by the Shivalik Ranges, Narkanda serves as a skiing resort in winters. This town lies 65 km away from Shimla on NH 22, Old Hindustan-Tibet Road, between the valleys of rivers Sutlej and Beas.

Along with other regions of Shimla, Narkanda was united with Nepal by Prithvi Narayan Shah, in 1806. During this union, other regions like Almora, Phatankot, Kumaon Garhwal, Simur, Dehradun and Kangra were also joined with Nepal. After the Gurkha War, which was fought between the British East India Company and Nepal, all these regions came under the administration of the East India Company as a part of the Sugauli Treaty.

Narkanda began to rise after the construction of the Hindustan-Tibet Road in 1850. The road was constructed on the orders of the British Governor General to create trade ties with Tibet. As Narkanda was located on the highest point on this road between Shimla and the river valley of the Satluj, the town flourished. Secondly, it was due to the sudden rise in apple production in Kotgarh-Thanedar belt at a few kilometres from Narkanda that this hilly terrain grew strong economically.

The main attraction of the town is skiing, which is organised by Himachal Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation from December through March. Hatu Peak, Stokes Farm and Thanedhar are the other major attractions. Shimla Airport at Jubbarhatti is the nearest airport to Narkanda. Situated on the Chandigarh-Shimla rail route, Kalka Railway Station is the nearest railhead.

The town is served by Narkanda Bus Stand, which serves buses from Rampur, Kinnaur, Kufri, Matiana, Theog, Fagu, New Delhi and Shimla. The best time to visit Narkanda is during the winter season, which lasts from October through March.
