To watch the colourful birds on Poovar island

HolidayIQ Reviewer Govindan Naganathan shares, “Poovar is about 45 minutes drive from Kovalam and this is a must-see place. One can hire boats for a trip to the backwaters. We paid Rs.1600/- for a one and a half hour ride in the backwaters. The boat goes through densely wooded areas and ride is truly exhilarating. Many colorful birds can be seen during the ride and it is a photographer's delight. The boat ride takes you to the golden sand beach which is one of its kind and very beautiful. During the boat ride, we also came across a statue of Mother Mary on a rock which is very beautiful. You will find an elephant rock a naturally formed rock structure in the shape of a standing elephant which is very beautiful. You can also see floating restaurant during the ride. Though we had paid Rs.1600/ the trip was truly memorable and unique. True value for money.”

For it's village beach

HolidayIQ Reviewer s Vidyagauri Lele adds, “It was a journey through sort of jungle through backwaters, the path was all curves. It took about 30 min by a somewhat slow motor boat to the beach. It was probably high tide and we enjoyed the strong waves and the foam on it. The waves can catch you unexpectedly.”

HolidayIQ Reviewer Vivek Tripathi says, “This beach is like just awesome. The waves are so damn cool, they just don't let you breathe.”

HolidayIQ Reviewer M S Sarang Nair says, “My rating is 10/10. Kovalam beach is an awesome place for tourists. Here you can enjoy a different kind of fun activities with delicious food. The facilities which are available in Kovalam is really great. The natural beauty, especially the sunset is wonderful.”

Roopkund: A mysterious lake

Roopkund is located in the chamoli district of Uttarakhand. It is among top trekking destinations currently in India. The lake is located in the midst of great snow clad mountains like mt. Trishul and mt. Nandaghunti at the altitude of 15, 480 ft. Human skeletons are found surrounding the lake. The overall trek is tough and not for faint hearted or physically weak people. But the difficulty is worth taking because of the breath- takinh views and the natural scenes on the way. During the course of the trek, one passes through ali bugle and bedini bugyal, asia's largest meadows at the height of above 12000 ft. The view from there is spetecular. The main joy of the trek is bugle. As such the roopkund itself is not that beautiful as it is hyped, especially in sept-oct but the way to it is incredible and worth visiting. During may-june season, we find snow and it adds to the thrill.

Poovar Overview

Poovar is a small coastal fishing island at the southern tip of Thiruvananthapuram district in Kerala. The village is embraced by a beautiful beach on one side and the backwaters on the other.

During high tides, an estuary links it to the sea. It is very close to harbor of Vizhinjam and is a network of lagoons, lakes, canals, estuaries, deltas, interspersing forty-four rivers that join the Arabian Sea. Located 38km from the State capital, a fifteen-minute boat ride reaches you at Poovar.

Poovar has been a trading centre and port in ancient times where timber, sandalwood, ivory and spices were traded. According to legends the port Ophir where King Solomon's trading ships landed is said to be Poovar. Another legend describes this as the place as where Maharaja Marthanda Varma was given protection from his enemies by the powerful merchant, Moosa Marikkar. It is said that the picturesque sight of red kovala flowers floating in the Neyyar River led the Maharaja to describe the river as pu (flower) ar (river) or the river of flowers.
