Roopkund: A mysterious lake

Roopkund is located in the chamoli district of Uttarakhand. It is among top trekking destinations currently in India. The lake is located in the midst of great snow clad mountains like mt. Trishul and mt. Nandaghunti at the altitude of 15, 480 ft. Human skeletons are found surrounding the lake. The overall trek is tough and not for faint hearted or physically weak people. But the difficulty is worth taking because of the breath- takinh views and the natural scenes on the way. During the course of the trek, one passes through ali bugle and bedini bugyal, asia's largest meadows at the height of above 12000 ft. The view from there is spetecular. The main joy of the trek is bugle. As such the roopkund itself is not that beautiful as it is hyped, especially in sept-oct but the way to it is incredible and worth visiting. During may-june season, we find snow and it adds to the thrill.

Backwaters, boating and golden sand beach

Located in between Kanyakumari and Kovalam ... Very near to Kovalam ... You will see an amazing view of backwaters .. You can also enjoy boating in the backwaters .. Go up to the golden sand beach .. Picturesque view of forest and island ... Although boating is a somewhat costly, it is enjoyable and highly recommended .. There is also scope of bird watching ..

Poovar Backwaters

I don't know why people try to link Kovalam beach with Poovar. Poovar is a backwater beach and you have no proper beach activities available.

You can better go to Kovalam to quest your beach thrills. In Poovar, you only have backwater rides and a stale horse ride.

Food outlets are also limited and you are dependent on the resorts you stay.

Must visit place

Poovar is a silent village is near to trivandrum. I stayed in club Mahindra Poovar which is fine resort in the bank of backwater. People who love water bodies and boat journey will love this place. River Neyyar is very near to Poovar. Boat travels can be arranged from Hotel or through travel agency. In the boat travelling you can see different types of birds and explore nature. They will take you to THE GOLDEN SAND BEACH which is the meeting place of river and sea. (Arabian sea of Kovalam). Don't miss this place. You can see this in summer season only. Visit Kovalam Beach, TRIVANDRUM PLANETARIUM, MUSEUM, SREE PADMANABHA TEMPLE ETC. Any way take minimum 2 days enjoy the beauty of beach.

Perfect Stressbuster

Poovar, 38 km from Thiruvananthapuram, is a perfect blend of mangrove forests, backwaters and beach, what Kerala actually stands for. Poovar has exotic spas and excellent resorts where you can laid back and enjoy nothingness. Golden Sand Beach is altogether another thing. A place that is untouched by mainstream tourists. Clean and well preserved. Enjoy a swim in calm waves with sea at one side and backwater on the other. You can also spot some rare bird species while boating through mangroves. The place takes you back in time.

Truly gods own country!

If you want to relax and be away from all the kinds of pollution, this is the place one should be. Enjoy the boat ride along with the beaches. It gives you the perfect combination of swimming pool, lake, river and ocean, all at one place. Stay at one of the resort having their own segregated beaches like Estuary island or Island de coco. Just leave all your worries back at the hotel and relax the sea beach.

Short visit to Poovar

When I visited Trivandrum, and I had a day to spare, since Padmanabha temple was closed, due to solar eclipse, I choose Poovar island for half day tour. The journey by taxi was short, about an hour towards Kanyakumari and we were dropped at a boat jetty. The boating fares are exorbitant, and but negotiations yielded fair discounts. Finally fixed at 2500 Rs for 2 hours. Journey was beautiful and exciting. The river joined sea at this place the sand mounds are excellent for kids to play. There is an elephant shaped big boulder jetting out of sea and another rock on which infant Jesus is sculptured. Limited hotels, restaurants but you can can enjoy Sea, Sands and Breeze. You get tender coconut water and some cool drinks only. Don't miss, if can make some time out with your family.

At the Tip of India!

If you guys ever head down to the tip of india, make sure you visit 'Poovar' its the tip of kerala. There is this sea side village called Pozhioor with a beach called 'Pozhikara' which has a river on one side and the arabian sea on the other. Walk up the beautiful beach and watch the river flow into the sea! If possible book into the floating resort and spend a night on a floating house.

(Warning! The water levels rise from time to time and the soil becomes slippery. Keep a safe distance from the river. Make sure your wearing your life jacket if opting for a boat ride. Donot enter water if you cant swim. )

See a different side to Kerala Backwaters - Fantastic Mangrooves

Poovar is an island that is easily accessible from the capital city of Kerala - Trivandrum by road. It is a very unique place given its location and the natural water bodies that surround it.

Once you reach Poovar jetty, there are boats that will take you to the main estuary point as it is called - here the backwaters of the neyyar river meet the salt water of the Arabian sea and the best part is in between these two massive water bodies is a large patch of sand where you can see both and relax and sit. :) it is indeed a sight to behold & cherish for the rest of your life!!!!

The best things to enjoy while at Poovar:
* Estuary point - must see
* Club Mahindra holiday resort - if you are one that loves luxury and nature alongside
* Boat ride - where you see a different side to the backwaters. These are ones that have mangroves surrounding them all over and a very rich foliage.

This is one place I recommend to anyone visiting south Kerala. Although it is not a popular or must have destination in most Kerala trip itineraries or travel companies however it is worth every bit of your money, time and self. This place has made my Kerala trip worth every moment.

Now that I have shared all the good things, let me warn you about a couple of things for your safety:
1. The waters of the Arabian sea run wild - so be cautious while playing with the waters else they will take you by surprise and you'll be a mass in the wide sea.
2. As the foliage is very dense and there are surrounding mangroves all over - it gets dark quite early. So keep the exploring and enjoying part for morning, afternoon and early evening, definitely not late else it will feel like you have been stranded in no man's land with the boat guy!

(sharing from our experience - luckily none of us got drowned by sea and our boat guy reached us safely to shore)

Note: we did not stay at Poovar.
