Red Hills escapade

. We went to the Red Hills as a day trip from Ooty . Vijay Kumar is the inheritor and owner and the stories he told us we're wonderful. Over the years the landscape of the surrounding areas has undergone huge change, he says. A number of dams were erected in the Nilgiris and Vijay's house now overlooks the beautiful catchment area of the Emerald dam. Out of the 250 acres of tea estate belonging to Vijay's family he owns about 70 acres. He became a professional tea planter. His tea gardens now surround his bunglow. Apart from commercial reasons, boredom and the urge to meet new people is sometimes the motivation behind starting homestays. And this was no exception. That's how the first homestay in the Nilgiris started. What we now know as the Red Hills Nature Resort The drive up to the lakes left us straining our necks to see more and more of the mesmerizing landscape with every odd turn! We stopped at the banks of the Emerald, and efficiently worked up our appetite throwing pebbles far, farther and as far as possible into the lakes! Glee in their faces and excitement in their limbs the twins (and their dad)went into a frenzy, I think! When you reach the 130 years old resort, nothing short of a spectacle awaits you. Nilgiris in the monsoon. A love affair that you cannot ignore! Undulating hills covered with tea gardens, the green carpet wearing a drapery of milky clouds and silvery fog, the songs of serenity idling through the curvacious cracks of the lakes below, fascinating shapes of blue tapestry, the monsoon interludes, handsome rumbles of the thunder, the dominating flash of lightening, the fragrance of jasmines and that white bench facing the perfect landscape. Can a recipe for taking your mind off from everything else that exists in the world, be more perfect What can do there all day? Here is what I did What did I do all day? Made friends with Moby -the sweetest dog you would have ever met! Became cheerleader for a running race between the husband and the german shepherd; refereed a soccer match between My kids and the dog! Dangled my legs on a steep wall facing the tea gardens and the lakes ahead. Felt the rain on my face. Sipped hot tea and munched on calamari fritters. Watched in awe as the clouds engulfed the lakes, teasing me with slices of muted mellow sunshine every now and then. And, left behind slices of my heart behind, watching every moment of this breathtaking, encompassing landscape ringed by high mountains all around, and pretty pink and white mountain daisies growing in between the tea gardens like a carpet Facts: takes about 1. 5 hrs to reach there from Ooty. The last leg has rough roads . Ideal to stay for a night if you can . The weather can be unpredictable.

Red Hills Overview

Red-Hills is located near Ooty in the Nilgiri ranges of the Nilgiris District, in the state of Tamil Nadu. Apart from being a part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, the destination is located at a distance of around 25 km from Ooty. Situated at an average elevation of around 7000 feet, the hill offers a view of the entire valley that is surrounded by tea plantations.

One of the prime attractions of Red-Hills is a 125 years old British bungalow, which has been turned into a family resort. The name of the destination has been derived from the name of the place in Britain, which was earlier the residence of the owner of the bungalow, Sir Willie Collins.

The Todas, who are the first inhabitants of the region, form a major part of the population. It is believed that the tribal God created the first Toda with the dust taken out from the earth. Historians state that in 1602, Jacome Ferreiri, a Syrian Christian priest, along with his followers crossed this mountainous country. He was apparently the first one after the Todas to spot this region. During 1830, people started settling in the region and the British appointed a military commandant to run the Ooty settlement.

Besides its pleasant atmosphere and beautiful views of the surroundings, Red-Hills is famous for its lush green forests, which houses variety of flora and fauna. Offering a beautiful view of dense woody forests, the bungalow has nine spacious bedrooms with log fireplaces and attached bathrooms, featuring British colonial architectural style.

Other prominent attractions in the vicinity of the destination are the lakes, which are located in and around the hills. Known as the Lake District of the region, there are eight lakes namely Parson’s Valley Lake, Western catchments numbered 1, 2 and 3, Emerald and Upper Bhavani. Apart from these, Avalanche and Porthimund are the other prominent lakes of the region. Tourists can also spot various species of avifauna in and around these lakes.

The nearest airport to Red-Hills is Coimbatore Airport at Tamil Nadu, at a distance of around 118 km away. The closest railway station is Mettupalayam, which is located at a distance of around 73 km. State owned as well as private bus services are available from most of the South Indian cities to Red-Hills.

Red-Hills is best visited during the months of September to May as the weather is pleasant and offers favourable climatic conditions.
