Reasons to go to Thangu

1Base camp, Thangu valley
Base camp, Thangu valley

Surrounded by snowcapped mountains, Thangu is the last civilian settlement before the Gurudongmar lake on the Chinese border. It is also at the edge of the Kangchedzonga National park. Some of the most remote trekking route use this town as base.

Deepak: Scenic beauty, peaceful and serene, no crowd at all. Only people coming to the holy shrine of tungnath come. A handful restaurants and even fewer hut houses to stay, situated between thick forest hills full of wildlife.

Beautiful valley, one of the best in Sikkim

Thangu (not to be confused with Changu or Tsomgo lake, which is near Nathula) is located at the centre of a beautiful valley with the same name. It is basically a military outpost and acts as a checkpoint and rest stop on the way to Gurudongmar Lake & Chopta Valley. It's located at an altitude of more than 4000 meters and it is recommended to take things slow. It's a good idea to eat & drink something hot here (like tea, soup or Maggi) and rest for a while before proceeding for Gurudongmar. Apparently, popcorn and dark chocolate also helps with the altitude. For us, Diamox tablets worked quite well. There are many small shacks run by locals and a wet canteen run by the Indian army. Some of them offer alcohol as well, but it's not recommended while going up. The views around this place are amazing - early morning, the mountain tops will be covered with fresh white snow but when you come back in the afternoon, the snow will be gone and you can see the bare mountains.

A beautiful lake but Gurudongma is better

Thangu is a beautiful lake situated in Sikkim. We went for the trip of Nathula, Baba temple and Thangu from Gangtok. No doubt one of the most popular tourist spot with a great view. However, Gurudongma is much more beautiful than Thangu. But the journey to Gurudongma is quite hectic. So, for the tourists who are looking for a short trip to Gangtok, Thangu is an ideal destination. Book a one day trip for Thangu- Baba Mandir- Nathula. Book a shared trip which will be quite economic.

Thangu Overview

Thangu is a small but scenic area, located in the state of Sikkim, at an altitude of 13,000 feet. The more popular tourist destination of Lachen, it is approximately at a distance of 30 km from Lachen. With introduction of tourism activities like trekking, river rafting, etc. adventure seekers have started coming to Thangu, which in turn has helped in the overall development of the village with some basic facilities for accommodation coming up.

Since it is located at a high altitude, the place remains snow covered for most of the time. The tranquil and serene valley of Thangu looks like a carpet of flowers during the months of May and June. The whole landscape turns into a valley of snow from October till March.

Thangu lies midway between Lachen and Gurudongmar Lake, which is considered sacred by both Buddhists and Hindus. The Gurudongmar Lake, located at an altitude of more than 5000 meters, is filled with crystal clear water during the months of June-July. By October the water starts freezing and during winter the lake resembles a sheet of ice.

Thangu has now become an important point where trekkers gather and stay to get used to the weather before proceeding for the trek to Chopta Valley and Muguthang. These two trekking routes attract a lot of adventure seekers both from India and abroad.

One of the important rivers in Sikkim, Teesta, originates from a place called Cho Lhamu which is close to Thangu. Lachen houses a Buddhist monastery visited by Buddhists in large numbers. The most important streams flowing through Thangu are Chopta Chu, Thangu Chu and Lassur Chu which provide ample opportunities for river rafting and fishing.

Thangu with scanty population is inhabited by the local nomadic tribes. The best time to visit Thangu is May, June and July. Bagdogra Airport is the nearest airport that is located near Sikkim. Reaching Thangu by road is easy as buses and jeeps ply on this route frequently. The nearest railway station is New Jalpaiguri.
