4 Kanchunjunga
  • View point

Kanchenjunga is the third highest mountain in the world (the first two being Mount Everest and K2), standing at an altitude of 8586 m. There are five peaks in Kanchenjunga. If you watch Kanchenjunga from the Observatory Hills, you might be deceived that the mount is a calm and serene upheaval of ice and snow. In reality, rock and ice avalanches more often thunder this ostensibly serene mount. There are not any direct routes to the mount. One has to try various indirect routes, probably starting by ascending any one of the five peaks, then finding any possible place for camping, and attempting the summit. As hardship it may give, a visit to Kanchenjunga is memorable.

5 The Mall and Chowrasta
  • Mall

You talk to anybody who had visited Darjeeling and ask about great places in the hill town, the Chowrasta Mall will surely be one thing that will figure in the description. That\'s true. The Chowrasta or the Mall is the heart of Darjeeling town. Located on top of Nehru Road, this is a nice flat land where tourists and locals come to lounge in the sun, take a seat on one of the many benches along the periphery, and watch the wonderful views of the mountain peaks and valleys all around. Mall is like the town center or the social center of Darjeeling. This is where some of the old and heritage stores are lined up on one side, and there is open view on the other with many pine trees all around. If you want to feel the real vibe of Darjeeling, watch people and activities, this is the place to come. Another thing that you won\'t miss here... there are lots of young local lads with their ponies offering horse rides to children. Many elderly tourists indulge as well. So why is the place known as Chowrasta Mall? The word \'Chow\' means four and \'rasta\' stands for roads. So it essentially means that the Mall is where four roads meet. To be precise, there are four important roads that meet at the Mall, and they are, The busy Nehru Road that comes up from below where all the popular tourist shops are lined up including many Bhutia stalls, The Dr. Zakir Hussain Road that comes in parallel to the Nehru Road through a busy local market area near the Mall, and The famous Mall Road on the opposite side which originates from one side, goes around the Observatory Hill and comes back into the Mall from the other side. So it\'s counted twice. However there are few other narrow lanes that also originate or terminate at the Mall that are not counted as part of the four main roads. So when you look around the Mall what do you see? On one occasion, I stood at the middle of the mall and slowly turned my head to get a full 360 degree view. What did I see? Imagine that the Mall area is like a circle. Here is my full account: I\'ll start from the entrance to the Mall from the Nehru Road. Right after the entrance there is a small fountain that has artificial models of golden colored fishes and pelicans with low iron fence around it. However I have seldom seen this fountain operational though.

One advice though, please visit this place only in summers if you really want to see a sunrise

7 Toy Train
  • Offbeat Attraction

Actually, sitting in this train can cost you a bit but it is a pleasant experience nevertheless. Albeit, looking it from outside seemed much more fun to me.

8 Batashiya Loop
  • View point

The early morning view of the Sikkim range and the shopping spree going on near the batashiya loop can never be missed... A must watch whenever in Darjeeling...
