This town, and district by the same name, is in the Garhwal Himalayas and best-known for being the base of the Gangotri and Yamunotri pilgrimages. Also known as Devbhumi or the land of the gods, this region has a stunning beauty untouched by human presence, making it seem truly mystical or divine. To the east is Chamoli district, while to the north lie Himachal Pradesh and Tibet.

2 Gaumukh
  • River
4.6/5

Goumukh glacier is situated 18 kms from the holy town of Gangotri and is the birthplace of the river Ganga. The trek route through the great Himalayan national park is scenic but also a strenuous one. Travelers who wish to visit Goumukh or Tapowan need to get a permit from the forest department office at Gangotri or Utharakashi which would cost 150 Rs per person. After leaving the Gangotri there will no shops until Chirbasa which is about 10 kms from the town hence it is advisable to carry water, energy bars or dry fruits along with you. There is a small camping site named Bhojbasa which is 4-5 kms from the glacier which the last inhabited location before the glacier. There are couple of camps in Bhojbasa which provides accommodation at a cheap rate.

5 Gaumukh

This is where the ganges river originates it is called Bhagirathi in that region. We began our 19km long trek from gangotri and by the evening we managed to reach a place called chirwasa a place at Bhagirathi valley. It was an interesting place a beach like setting at the river bank we camped and spent night at chirwasa. During the night it got really cold we could see some of the most reputed peaks of the country gangotri 1, 2, 3 and Bhagirathi 1, 2, 3 and icing of the cake glowing like a crown shivling peak. Next day we started early morning to reach gaumukh asap. On the way we experience 500metre long landslide prone area where we had to run and cross missing the falling stones. Finally in few hours we reached Gangotri –trust me guys I had never seen something so beautiful. This time we were not seeing mountain covered with ice this time it was mountain of ice my first ever experience at glaciers it was simply jaw dropping beauty. That feeling of seeing origin of India’s longest river. Like everyone else even I got a bottle of pure ganga water home. Worth every step we took in 19km long trek. Life time opportunity.

▪ The trek from Gomukh to Tapovan is a ascent crossing over the Gaumukh glacier, and as one climbs, the view of the surrounding peaks becomes clearer, and appear to be just a stone's throw away!
▪ Tapovan known for its beautiful meadows that encircle the base camp of the Shivling peak, visited by hundreds of tourist, mountaineers, trekkers and ascetics every year.
