\"beautiful place....serene surrounds and lots of fun, enjoy, relaxed\" only usha ascot hotel in matheran...
Matheran in general is a relatively small tourist destination. Its proximity to Mumbai and Pune makes it a preferred weekend choice for holidays. The climate around Feb end is not really an ideal time to visit, but the mornings and evenings turn out to be extremely pleasant. Our stay at Horseland was peaceful and relaxing. The hotel staff took complete care of all our requests and were very helpful. The facilities such as a clean and well maintained swimmimg pool, spa treatments etc also added to our comfort.
Best Experience: The best parts of our stay at Horseland were - good food. We prefer vegetarian food, cooked without onions and garlic, and the staff made sure they served us all ooptions of food specially cooked as per our preferences. Apart from that - the swimming pool was cleaned twice everyday. The resort also arranged for some interesting group activities which had a campfire at Echopoint which turned out to be amazing experience.
I have been to Usha Ascot Matheran by Nov 2013 and it was with one of my friend and the purpose was to relax and unwind. We booked online though Make My Trip and must say got a good deal for 2 nights and 3 days. We booked exec room. We did call the hotel and informed that we would be checking in late. Due to problem with local train we reached as late by 3:00 pm and as soon as we approached Front desk they welcomed us and took our luggage and were escorted to Restaurant for Lunch but ideally their timing was till 2:30 pm, so this gesture was really good. The food served was really good, tasty, excellent in quality, fresh vegetables used. The lunch served to us was as good as home-made food. We have been escorted from Restaurant to our room with Room attendant. As soon as we entered the room, the first thing which attracted us was the King size bad and the Linens used. It was really amazing. The colour and the decoration of the room was excellent. The room had proper air-vent and had all the things in absolute working condition right from AC to hot water, TV, phone. Any calls made to Housekeeping for any service for cleaning the room was immediately attended. Similarly was the case of Room- service. The gaming zone was good with pool table, carom-board, table tennis, badminton. But the room was under construction so it was a bit mess with all furniture lying around. This needs to be sorted out. Apart from this whole staff were very polite, courteous, professional and very helpful. It was indeed a memorable stay. The hygiene was really taken care off right from the hotels entrance to the lobby. Room, wash-rooms, playing area, Swimming pool was good and would love to visit this hotel soon.
I visited this property with my office colleagues for a overnight outing. This is a Heritage property located in an area of 7 acres surrounded by dense trees and away from noise. Byke Retreat is quite a walk from Matheran taxi stand as it takes almost 1 hour walking to reach this property. This property consists of various cottages, deluxe rooms and executive rooms all of which feature balcony. We had booked the executive suite which consists of 2 bedrooms and a balcony facing the front. The swimming pool was big enough but since it was winter, we did not dare to use it. This property also has its own discotheque and it played very groovy songs. Charlotte Lake is the nearest tourist point which is at a walking distance of 30 minutes from this property. The food was good but they only serve pure vegetarian and Jain food. Staff and the front desk were friendly and always ready to help. Overall a wonderful and peaceful stay for all of us. I would definitely recommend this property to everyone for peaceful and enjoyable stay.
If you desire a quiet place free of noise and sounds, free of CO and CO2, there is nothing like Matheran. It is a tiny hill station free of pollution, all of the vehicular kind, not very far from the city of Mumbai - just ideal for a re-charge over a week end.
A 100 kms of pleasant drive from Mumbai, provided you manage to get out of city before many vehicles come out on the roads, a left turn from the old Mumbai - Pune Highway beyond Panvel, you will find a way to Katraj and before you find the town of Katraj, you take a left turn again to start climbing to reach this little heaven in woods, all above 800 meters from the Mean Sea Level. You need to negotiate at least one steepy climb, strictly in first gear ! You can only reach up to Dasturi, beyond which no vehicles are allowed. If you love your car carry a cover which can be properly tied / locked, particularly when you are on an overnight stay or on a 2 day trip.
Horse rides and human driven rickshaws, mostly for the senior citizens or very lazy species are abundantly available to take over from this stage.
There are other interesting options, i.e., you take a heritage toy train from Nerul which takes couple of hours thru a serpentine tiny track, to climb thru the western ghats to reach right upto Matheran.
You have the option of a day visit, where in you can walk, walk and walk throughout the day and return on the same evening and if you really want to sink in to the environs of green trees and brown woods and do not want to miss a sunrise / sunset, staying one night is a must.
There are good options like Brightlands Resort (Contact : 022-43333444 and 02148-230831) and Kumar Plaza ( 09403062444 and 02148 230329) where you can spend a night with a bit of planning and booking at a price of Rs.2,000 per person (all of breakfast, lunch, tea and dinner included).
There are points, points and points all over Matheran, but the fun is in walking thru or riding over a horse through the muddy woods. Mud is the essence, sine the name Matheran itself has come from Mathe ( a equivalent of mud in marathi). There is a small lake and a micro dam with chill static waters where you would feel like soaking your feet after a not so familiar 8s and 10s of kms of walk. Amongst other important places to visit, there is this Echo Point, Monkey Point and that Panorama Point. If you are adventurous type there is a serious option of crossing the valley over on a rope and a smaller version of the same at Charlott Lake for not so adventurous or kids.
You need a good and comfortable pair of shoes and a light and comfortable wear to take you through the day. Could be chilly in the winters.
For the shopping freaks, there is some scope to buy interesting and colourful dry plants, thin and light handmade chappals and all other routine hill station stuff !!!
Any time of the year must be okay but the weeks immediately after the monsoon, the place must be beautiful. You won\'t realize that you had walked a full 12 to 15 kms over a two day stay, unless you sit and calculate, particularly since the place is so kleeen of pollutants that you never get tired. Don\'t forget to check your weight immediately after te trip and a pleasant surprise awaits you !!!
Best Experience: Just walking around in this zero pollution land is in itself a fresh and enriching experience.
Worst Experience: No.
