IRCTC Southern Railway Zone
One of the sixteen zones established after independence, Southern Railways came into existence in the year 1951. Railways of three states consisting Madras, Southern Maharashtra Railway, Mysore State Railway, and Southern Indian Railway were merged together to form Southern Railways zone India.
Before Independence, the headquarters of the railways was Tiruchirapalli but now it is operated from Chennai. The zone is divided into six divisions viz. Chennai, Salem, Madurai, Thiruvananthapuram, Palakkad and Tiruchirapalli.
Southern railways zone contains all of the major stations of the region and is very vital for commute for many passengers here. Trains such as the one from Bangalore to Tirupati are almost always full owing to the high demand. Different trains such as the Duronto as well as other passenger trains too ply in the region for anybody who wishes to utilize it. This high demand is one of the reasons that is important to have a Southern railway reservation on hand much before.
It covers all major regions of Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Pondicherry and some segments of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. The railway carries over 500 million passengers every year. This zone unlike other railways generates revenue serving passengers and not freight. Central Station of Chennai, which is a part of Southern Railways, alone, serves more than one million passengers daily. Major stations including Chennai, Madurai, Tiruchirapalli and Thiruvananthapuram are being upgraded.
A new railway division was approved in the year 2005 with Salem as its headquarters. The division covers regions taken from Tiruchirapalli and Palakkad divisions. The genesis of this division has helped improve the quality of service and in launching new trains, hence meeting the needs of passengers.
