Al Ain Overview

Al Ain, meaning The Spring in Arabic, is the fourth largest city in the United Arab Emirates. With a population of 3, 74,000, as recorded in the year 2009, this is also the second largest city in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.
With each city being located at a distance of approximately 145 km from the other two, Al Ain, Dubai and Abu Dhabi form a geographical triangle at the centre of UAE.
The history of the city dates back more than 4,000 years. Since this time, the place has seen continuous inhabitation. The city is the birthplace of the first president of United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan. His presence can be seen all over the city with museums especially focused on him.
Due to the location of the city at an approximate distance of 160 km from Abu Dhabi and 120 km from Dubai, Al Ain is a popular destination of UAE. With the presence of Al Ain International Airport, one can reach the city from India by air travel.
There is a direct flight from Kozhikode to Al Ain. Additionally, there are a number of indirect flights from the major cities of India such as Bangalore and Chennai, with one or two stopovers en-route. One can also reach Al Ain from Dubai and Abu Dhabi with other means of transport, such as taxis or buses.
The Al Ain National Museum, Al Ain Old Prison and the Al Ain Palace Museum are the places of historical importance and are worth watching. People looking for enjoyment can head towards the Hili Fun City, which is one of the largest amusement parks of the city. Several thrilling rides are available here, such as roller coaster and flyer that are suitable for all age groups.
Along with the sightseeing, one can also engage in different sports activities such as Karting, ice skating, bowling and dune bashing. One wishing to indulge in shopping can head to malls such as Al Ain Mall and traditional souks such as Buraimi Souk. One can find everything in these places, ranging from traditional handicrafts and artefacts to modern equipments.
Several restaurants are located on the Khalifa Street that offer mouth-watering Arabian dishes. For leisure and business travelers, there are hotels like Intercontinental and Hilton that provide accommodation and various other add-on facilities. Though tourists throng Al Ain all the year round, the ideal time to visit the place is during the winter season.
