The sites are mesmerizing

One of the best locations I have ever visited in my overall travel of over 20 countries. The temples in Siem Reap are just wonderful and so are the hotels and people. My family and myself would love to visit the country again to explore the other areas

Cambodia Overview

Cambodia, a Southeast Asian country, is flanked by Thailand in the west and Laos and Vietnam in the east. The country is surrounded by the Gulf of Thailand towards the south-western part. The Mekong River and Tonle Sap Lake are the main geographical landmarks of Cambodia.

The capital city of Cambodia is Phnom Penh. Other major cities include Siem Reap, Sihanoukville and Koh Kong. Temperatures in the area range from 21° Celsius to 35° Celsius, with the climate being primarily divided into dry season and rainy season. Rainy season brings along floods that affect many parts of the country.

The country is ruled by the King who is the head of the state in this constitutional monarchy. Second to him is the Prime Minister, who is the head of the Cambodian government. The national language Khmer is derived from the ruling ethnic majority of the same name. Theravada Buddhism is the main religion of the country.

Cambodian history goes back to prehistoric times. The 4th century BC brought about trade relations with India. For this reason, the 3rd, 4th and 5th centuries AD mark the establishment of Funan and Chenla states that were Indian in character. Later on, the Khmer empire flourished from the 9th to the 13th centuries AD. This empire saw the rise of Angkor Wat that is a conglomeration of temples with a unique architectural style.

The Angkor Wat is also known as one of the largest pre-industrial settlements in the world and is a major tourist destination in present-day Cambodia. This complex was abandoned due to ecological, political and infrastructural problems in 1452. Theravada Buddhism entered the country in the13th century and changed the religious inclination of the people.

From 1452 onwards, Cambodia continued as a subsidiary of the Ayutthaya Kingdom and the kingdoms of Vietnam. Later on, it became a protectorate of France and continued to be so from 1863 to 1953. King Norodom became head of the kingdom in 1863 and the long line of Cambodian kings continued thereafter. Briefly, from the period of 1941 to 1945, Cambodia came under the influence of Japan.

It was with the help of King Norodom Sihanouk that Cambodia gained independence from France in 1953. He established constitutional monarchy in the country. Sihanouk showed allegiance towards communism during the Cold War period because of which he was overthrown by a military coup, which was supported by the US.

Henceforth, the Khmer Rouge came to rule the country from 1975 onwards. This rule is characterised by forced work on rural projects, ethnic cleansing and mass killings. Peace prevailed in Cambodia only after 1989, when the State of Cambodia was established. Norodom Sihanouk was declared the King of Cambodia in 1993.

Some of the popular tourist destinations in Cambodia are temples of Angkor Wat, Battambang city and its sites, Sambor Prei Kuk (sambor architecture) and Kampot (seafood). The Karakoram National Resort (protected forest area with wildlife) and Kratie (home of freshwater dolphins) offer interesting sightseeing opportunities.

Other places comprise Mondulkiri (natural sightseeing for adventure enthusiasts), Phnom Penh (Royal Palace), Prasat Preah Vihear (temple architecture with situ carving), Ratanakiri (natural sightseeing) and Sihanoukville (beach resorts), to name a few.

The tourist season commences in Cambodia in November and goes on till January. The rainy season, from May to October, brings about beautiful changes in the scenery of the country, but the roads become muddy and the weather humid. The Water Festival in November celebrates the rise in the Mekong River and reversal in the course of the Tonle Sap.
