History

Galle Face Green was originally far bigger in size than what we see today. The Dutch earmarked the area for military purposes. One adaptation suggests that the name Galle Face is derived the Dutch language referring to fortifications.

Later on in the year 1856, after years of planning the then, Governor Sir Henry George Ward commissioned the construction of a one-mile walkway along the Galle Face Green. The open space, completed in 1859, saw many horseracing events and served as a makeshift golf course too.

Once an interim burial ground of the British Army, it was converted into a public park in the 1920s.

Colombo

A place we always wanted to visit for its charming fort located close to the sea, famous cricket ground and museum. One need to spend hours wondering at the marvel with the sea lapping its waves. It is an experience to stand by the sea from the fort. The cricket ground is located adjacent to the fort and is just beautiful. When we visited, the fort was bustling with tourists from all hues. Despite its popularity and endless stream of visitors and cafes all around, the place is maintained neat and clean. You do not find any trace of garbage any where. Responsible tourism in its true sense. Sri lankans take pride in maintaining their places.

A lot of people hanging around in the evening, flying kites and eating at one of the many small eateries next to the sea. Must try is the Sri Lankan Kothu porotta

Amazing Sunset view

This is a long narrow beach and the sea. It was built by the Dutch to give the cannons of Fort a clear line of fire. On most days it's beautiful with kite flyers, bubble blowers, families and canoodling couples, Bit crowded in Saturday & Sunday evening. Food vendors around offer snacks. All top 5 star hotels located around Galle Face. You can't swim in the sea but you can see the locals. This is a very good highlight in Colombo.

Splendid view of the sea

The view of the sea and color of the sea were something to remember and cherish, especially during sunset. Clear water and the rocks beneath added to the attraction.
