Gangaramya Temple & Museum

The Gangaramaya Buddhist temple is located near the Beira Lake. It is considered as an important place to visit by both local and foreign tourists and pilgrims. We were told that earlier, devotees had to cross the Beira Lake on a boat in order to reach the temple. Gangaramaya Buddhist temple is beautiful and is said to have been built in the 19th century. There is a Bo tree under which Lord Buddha is said to have preached and this Bo tree is considered as a sapling of the Sri MahaBodhi and is over 100 years old. This Temple is famous for its imposing buildings, and is complete with a bo tree, image house, Simamalaka, relic chamber containing the relics of the Buddha, museum, library and residential education center and alms halls. The perimeter wall is decorated with dwarfs. Buddhists believe that such pygmy statues avoid the bad luck and bring you prosperity. There is also a collection of artifacts and other objects of religious, cultural and historical value, in the museum of the temple. Today the museum has a range of ageless treasures from ancient SriLanka as well as around the globe, including valuable Buddha statues of different influences, ancient ola leaf writings, old coins, vehicles and other relics in a classic display of tradition and culture. We also saw few vintage cars like Rolls Royce in the complex which is supposed to be used by the queen of England. We were told that the holy hair relic of Lord Buddha gifted by Bangladesh is also placed at the Gangaramaya temple. This temple complex has a library, a museum and an extraordinary collection of bejeweled and gilded gifts presented by devotees and well-wishers over the years. Just across the Gangaramya temple there is a small temple in the middle of a tank which also we visited. There is an entry ticket of SLR 200 per person to visit Gangaramya temple which is also valid for the temple just across Gangaramaya in the middle of water in a tank. Since our guide was familiar with the history and importance of the temple his explanations were good and we enjoyed this temple visit very much. This is a must visit place in Colombo for tourists and will take at least 3 to 4 hours to see.

Excellent Buddha temple

Though it's a big complex with museums etc, we just visited the main temple that is too good with huge golden sitting Buddha's statue in the centre and few more in standing poses. The big statue is excellent and keeps you constantly observing the serene meditating Buddha. The outer walls have many mural type statues depicting life and instances of the great Buddha. It is a not to be missed temple, right witching the city of Colombo and very easily reachable too.

A temple must visit

This was my first visit to both Colombo and to a Buddhist Temple. The hundreds of Buddha statues there would just mesmerise you! The kind of calm and peace this place provides you cannot be explained and one must visit this temple to experience the same.
