Sri Lanka is a beautiful land of splendid beaches, good food and excellent tourist spots. Mount Lavinia beach is one of the most vibrant suburban towns of Sri Lanka – extremely popular for its pristine beaches. Each year, annual Rainbow Kite Festival is celebrated there with full fervor gaiety in the month of October.

Strolling across the Mount Lavinia beach with crimson sunlight scattered all across the sky in the evening is a splendid sight that no traveller wants to miss out.

History

The name of the beach has its origin from the vibrant history of Ceylon (currently, Sri Lanka). Sir Thomas Maitland, the second Governor of Ceylon, has reclaimed a land “Galkissa” (Mount Lavinia) and went on to build a palatial mansion here.

With a passage of time, Maitland immensely fell in love with the place. And soon he also fell in love with Lovina Aponsuwa, a local Mestizo dancer. Mount Lavinia beach is named after Lovina, the Maitland’s love interest several summers back.

We were staying close to the beach which is in prime location. One can spend hours and savor some of the best street food available once the sun sets. Despite the number of visitors who throng the beach and food stalls the beach is maintained clean.

      Pristine

Like all the other Srilankan beaches this one is also neat and clean. Despite boasting of several food shacks, it is kept spotlessly clean. One can spend hours gazing into the sea besides savoring the attractions around.
