Ranked 1 of 18 sightseeing in Istanbul
An important monument that is of significance to both the Byzantine and Ottoman empires, the Hagia Sofia first began as a church, later morphed into a mosque and now stands as a museum. Built on the order of Emperor Justinian, the church was later converted into a mosque by Mehmet the Conqueror. The Turkish government declared it as a museum in 1935 as it encapsulates architecture, art, religion and history all within one extraordinarily beautiful structure. Tickets cost: 20 Lira for adults; free for children below 12 years of age.

Location:. Located in a prime spot in old Istanbul city. Has many tourist attractions in the vicinity like Blue Mosque and Cistern Basilica, at a stone's throw distance Architecture:. It is an architectural marvel and is quite huge. You need few hours to take a trip of complete area. It shows the rich history of Turkey and of the Ottoman Empire. Has a grand central dome, ancient antiques, and tomb as well Entry charges:. Last updated charges were 25 TL. Overal, it's worth and a must visit in Istanbul. In the middle of History

You will need to read up a bit about the history of Hagia Sophia - the Byzantine Empire and Ottoman empire to truly understand the significance and grandeur of the Hagia Sophia. Its been one of my most memorable experiences

Great architecture and try the local Gozleme

Stunning a must visit. Hagia Sophia stands today as one of the world's greatest architectural marvels. Visit the Underground Cisterns alongside - they too are worth a visit. Some of the small eating joints will sell the famous local dish "gozleme" - it is a pancake with cheese and spinach stuffing.

Impressive

One of the key attractions of this old city. Architecturally interesting with some fine mosaics. Ongoing repairs of its interiors marred my photo-ops but I still managed to get some good photographs. You must visit the upper galleries. Rent an audio guide if you're interested in the details.

Take a ferry to reach

I took a ferry ride and was shown the bridge which divides Istanbul into Europe and ASEAN and all old palaces were shown. I did not pay any fee as it was included in the sightseeing tour costing 80 Euro.
