An important monument that is of significance to both the Byzantine and Ottoman empires, the Hagia Sofia first began as a church, later morphed into a mosque and now stands as a museum. Built on the order of Emperor Justinian, the church was later converted into a mosque by Mehmet the Conqueror. The Turkish government declared it as a museum in 1935 as it encapsulates architecture, art, religion and history all within one extraordinarily beautiful structure.
