Rome

Italy's capital Rome is a sprawling cosmopolitan city with nearly 3000 years of globally influential art architecture and culture on display. A heady mix of haunting ruins, awe inspiring art and vibrant street life and indeed very romantic ...

Great Place to Visit

I have been to Italy twice. Both the time I had got memories to cherish. It is a wonderful coutry with great people. If you are a foodie, Italy is the country you want yourself to be. You don't want to miss on pizza, pasta, spaghetti, espresso, cappuccino, tiramisu etc. If you like to travel and see the historical places then you have to visit Italy. You would be surprised to know that Italy has the maximum world heritage sites in the world. I travelled mostly the central and northern Italy including Rome, Milan, Florence, Venice and Vatican City. Next time, I will love to visit the southern Italy which I have heard is more beautiful. You have numerous places to visit like leaning tower of Pisa, colosseum, Pantheon, Ponte in Florence, Florence Cathedral, Murano, Burano and other Venice islands etc Your knowing Italian language can really help you to have fun in Italy. You are well received if you speak Italian. Many people don't know English and at times it become difficult to ask things if you don't know Italian. Knowing some basic Italian is highly recommended. Having said that, if you are travelling historical places you can always have Italian guide who can interprate in English Italy is also known for Fashion. At the end of the year there are discounts where you can end up getting good deals. In Italy buses are being used to travel for small distances, else trains. You can also hire cab. Out of the famous Italian Cities, Rome is the busiest city. It is very crowded. If you like water, Venice is the place to visit. I particularly liked Florence city. It is a small city but has a lot of history. My experience has been fantastic. I would love to visit Italia again!

Italy Overview

Officially known as the Italian Republic, Italy is a popular tourist destination located in south-central Europe. Sprawling over an area of around 3,01,338 sq km, the boot-shaped country comprises the Italian peninsula along with the two largest islands, Sicily and Sardinia. It also contains the island of Elba that is the largest in the Tuscan Archipelago.

Italy shares its borders in the north with countries like France, Switzerland, Austria and Slovenia. The northern side of Italy is protected by the Alps, whereas the Apennine Mountains form the peninsular backbone. Mont Blanc (4,810 metres), the highest peak in Italy lies in the Alps.

The longest river of Italy, Po, flows between two mountain ranges to form the Po Valley at the basin. Some of the other rivers that flow through the country are Piave, Adige, Reno, Arno, Tiber and Volturno. Sub Alpine Lake Garda forms the largest lake of the country and lies in the north, along with Lake Maggiore and Lake Como. Italy is also home to the largest active volcano of Europe, Etna.

It is believed that life in Italy dates back to the Palaeolithic period which is around 2, 00,000 years old. The Greeks migrated to the land during the 8th and 7th century BC. The Roman culture was also founded in the 8th century.

The merger ended in 395 AD and the empire divided into the Western Roman Empire and the Eastern Roman Empire. Under the influence of the Goths, the Western Roman Empire dissolved and formed small independent kingdoms and feuding cities in the Italian peninsula.

The Byzantine Emperor Justinian defeated the Ostrogoths and conquered Italy in the 6th century. During this time, Italy’s Maritime Republics -- Venice, Genoa, Pisa and Amalfi were the gateways of trade between Europe and the East. The 15th and 16th century in Italy were marked by the Renaissance.

The Italian Renaissance started spreading its roots in Florence and spread over till Rome. Renaissance was the time when art and culture was at its boom in Italy. In 1348, one third of the population was killed and the Black Death pandemic occurred in Italy. After this, the phase of Humanism and Renaissance occurred and Italy again became the centre of Western civilisation.

From 1494 to 1559, Italian Wars marked the beginning of foreign domination in Italy. Italy remained in peace under the rule of Habsburg Spain (1559 to 1713) and Habsburg Austria (1713 to 1796).

Again in the 14th century, Black Death haunted Italy and continued till the 17th century. The French Empire invaded northern Italy during the Napoleonic Wars, whereas southern Italy was administered by Joachim Murat.

In the late 18th century, Italian unification occurred, when the Italian kingdom was formed, encompassing the entire Italian Peninsula. The kingdom of Piedmont-Sardinia that ruled northern Italy declared a war against the Austrian Empire and the Second Italian War of Independence took place.

Emerging as winners of the war with the help of Napoleon III, the Austrian Empire liberated Lombardy-Venetia and declared Turin as the capital. However, the capital was moved to Florence in 1865.

On conquering Albania, Italy entered World War II in 1940 from the side of the Axis powers. In July 1943, Italy was invaded by the Allies that resulted in the collapse of the Fascist regime as well as Mussolini.

Italy surrendered in 1943 after which it remained a battlefield for the rest of the war. After a referendum held on June 2, 1946, Italy became a republic and Rome was declared as its capital.

Inhabited by around 60.4 million people, Italy is the sixth most populous country in Europe. Italian is the official language of the country, which is spoken by 55 million people throughout the country. Roman Catholicism is followed by 87.8% of the population.

Along with French and British fashion, Italian fashion is also regarded as one of the most important in the world. Major Italian brands like Prada, Versace, Valentino, Armani and Dolce & Gabbana are some of the most prestigious fashion brands across the world.

Italy is the fourth highest tourism earner in the world. With several world renowned tourist attractions like the Leaning Tower of Pisa, Colosseum and Ruins at Pompeii, Italy is the fifth most visited country in the world. The best time to visit Italy is from April to June and September to October, when the weather is favourable.
