An enjoyable experience for the children

Nice Place for a day outing from Colombo. It takes 3 hours from Colombo. Entrance fees are separate and you should produce your passports to get a ticket as the prices are different for different nationals. You should reach there by 10 am. They take Elephants for bathing in a river nearby. The bathing time is for 2 hours. Then comes the feeding time. For feeding one should buy separate tickets ( it is not included in entrance fees). One can buy fruits (inside stalls are there). They don't allow fruits from outside the orphanage. One can also bottle feed a Baby Elephant. The feeding time starts from 1.15 PM. The are nearby restaurant which are expensive. One can pack it either from Colombo or can have it in Warakapola. Elephant poo paper is a must buy. Other things you can buy in Colombo at Sea Street or at Water's edge. You get the same at affordable prices.

Must visit place if one is visiting Kandy

Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage is on the way to Kandy from Colombo. This is must visit place if one is visiting Kandy. Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage is in Sabaragamuwa Province of Sri Lanka. An entry fee is charged which is Rs. 700 /-(SLR) per head. The orphanage is open for visitors from 8. 30 AM to 5. 30 PM. One can watch the elephants being taken to river for bath in herds at 10 AM and 2 PM and return from river after bath at 12 noon and 4 PM. The Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage was established by the Sri Lankan Department of Wildlife Conservation for feeding and providing care and sanctuary to orphaned baby elephants that were found in the wild. This is situated in a 25 Acre coconut plantation area near river Maa Oya. Elephants are taken in groups for bathing to Maa Oya River. We were told by the guide that there are around 60/70 elephants consisting of baby elephants and grownup ones. The orphanage feed, nurse and house young elephants found abandoned by their mothers. Young elephants sometimes fall into pits and ravines in their quest for water during drought period. These elephants are brought to orphanage and cared for. Veterinary care is provided for wounded elephants which are adopted by this orphanage. We went from Pinnawala orphanage to River Maa Oya which is just across the orphanage to watch elephants bathing. There are a lot of Hotels offering good food near the Elephant orphanage.

Amidst a lot of Elephants

This place was the first on our itinerary; kids loved it thoroughly. We clicked great snaps and had a great time overall. Sri Lankan tourism department offered a discount for all SAARC countries passport holders. It was a really sweet gesture from them. We had a great time inside the place where we saw baby elephants taking bath.
