Ranked 2 of 36 sightseeing in Krabi

A sun soaked beach set in a beautiful limestone ridged peninsula on Thailand’s west coast, the Railay Beach is one of the famous recreational and relaxation destinations on the Krabi circuit. Whether you are looking for an idyllic day by the sea or some water activities, this pristine beach is a perfect venue.

History

Krabi’s recent history s defined by its unique topography and beautiful beaches that acted as a magnet for rock climbers and backpackers post Thailand’s 1960s tourism boost. The main town itself has its beginnings in the 18th century as an elephant kraal for the Siam kingdom.

Reasons to Visit Railay (Rai Leh)

The natural beauty of Railay Beach is something that will immerse you at first sight. The beach and surrounding areas is a favourite destination for adventure sport enthusiasts and the topography is a rock climbing haven. There are many hidden spots off the coast which are perfect for diving and snorkelling.

Railay Beach also has many spots where you can unwind over some drinks and live the beach vacation you always dreamt off. This geographically isolated tropical haven is stocked with all the basic facilities. Most social spots here are Wifi enabled so you can come on the grid if you please. Nearby caves and forests with their simian residents provide plenty of unique experiences.

The larger area includes four separate beaches. Attractions include the East Railay boardwalk which is host to many eateries and bars. A Muay Thai school is situated here along with many resorts and hotels. Another landmark of this area is the Diamond Cave where you can take the walkway and explore its subterranean depths.

The beach activities are largely concentrated in West Railay, and this is a transit point for trips to other islands and beaches. You can relax on the white sands while admiring the limestone framed ocean scenery. West Railay beach is centred on a promenade with more restaurants and shops and you can also plan excursions inland into the surrounding jungles and rocky features.

Four islands, three stops and one long tail boat is how you can summarize this famous tour. Along with witnessing the eccentrically shaped rock formations on Kai Island, you can snorkel and explore some of the reefs in the area. Visit the Tup and Koh Mawr Islands which are separated by a sand bar bridge. The last stop is the Poda Island with its iconic limestone outcropping that shoots out of the sea waters.

Entry Guidelines

Cut off from the mainland by the iconic limestone cliffs that jut out of the coast, Railay is accessible by boats from Ao Nang Beach which then docks at East Railay. The charge per person is around 60 baht for a one way journey.

Where to Eat

There is no dearth of restaurants in Railay and the fresh seafood dishes here are very well known along with some of the Thai specials. Fret not if you miss your desi specials as Railay Beach’s Kohinoor restaurant serves your favourite Indian delicacies.

A nearby beach

It is a nice beach near to Timber House Resort ... We explore by foot & then by boat ... In evening many people visit this place & one can get good photos, worth taking a stroll during sun set, it is very much recommended.

Just relax and highly recommended

Rai Leh Beach is approachable via boat from Ao Nang beach just 15 min from there. One of the most relaxing beach in Krabi. It has several hotels on the beach to stay at, snorkelling in crystal clear water but be careful as this beach is a rocky beach. Highly recommendable.
