Ranked 8 of 36 sightseeing in Krabi

Tup Island or Koh Tap is considered to be one of the prettiest islands on the Krabi circuit. Part of a larger island group that consists of Chicken Island and Koh Mor, Tup has clear waters that are teeming with some of the most beautiful marine life that Thailand’s west coast is famous for.

History

Krabi’s recent tourism history is rooted in Thailand’s tourism boom of the 1960s. The region started attracting visitors and adventure enthusiasts from all over the world due to its beautiful terrain. The modern beginnings of the region are from the 18th Century onwards when an elephant kraal was established here, and Krabi town gradually grew in importance.

Reason to Visit

Tup Island at low tide provides some of the most unique exploration opportunities. This place is known as a photographer’s haven. Many photography enthusiasts come here, especially to capture the division of the sea by the island’s sandbar. There are spectacular views of surrounding islands and the mainland as well that can be taken in different lights, depending on the time of day.

The sandbar joins the surrounding islands and creates a division of the sea. One can safely walk on the sandbar from one island to another. This gives travellers the feeling of walking on the surface of the sea.

This small island boasts a pristine white sand beach and lush grove of vegetation that conjures up images of shipwrecked survivors living on tropical island paradises.

Snorkelling is a popular activity on the island of Koh Tap. The surrounding waters of the island are full of thriving reefs abundant with fish. One can explore these beautiful underwater landscapes and swim among colourful and unique marine life that is endemic to this region.

Entry Guidelines

To get to Koh Tap or Tup Island, one can hop on to a shared long boat at Ao Nang beach for around 300 Baht per head. Sometimes, one may have to wait for the boat to fill up. Chartering a boat is also an option. Most Tup Island trips are part of a larger Four Islands excursion that includes the iconic Chicken Island (Koh Kai) nearby.

Island hopping longboats are also available at other beaches like Nonparat Thara, Railay and Klong Muang.

Tup Island is a day-trip destination and ideally, one should head out in the morning to experience the low tide. Visitors should ensure that their boat includes snorkelling gear so they do not miss out on the fun. One is recommended to carry some bread on them, which will attract the fish when snorkelling.

Where to Eat

There are no restaurants on the island but a stall sometimes sells beverages like beer. Throwing in a smile and requesting for a ‘Thai price’ and might shave off some Bahts from their original prices. Visitors can grab a bite at nearby Chicken Island, which is literally just a walk away (at low tide). With lots of restaurants on the mainland including Indian ones, one is never too far away from a good meal.
