Reasons to go to Osaka

1For its mouth-watering desserts
For its mouth-watering desserts

HolidayIQ Reviewer Ravi Mittal says, “We found the aquarium to be the best thing to do in Osaka....they have food & drink for sale here and they tasted heavenly. The souvenir shop also was quite nice and most of us bought something for memories. Nice castle and marvelous cherry blossom viewing! I cannot comment on how it would look throughout the year, however, in cherry blossom season, this place looks absolutely gorgeous...There are several food kiosks outside that served some of the best mouth-watering dishes ever.”

A fabulous place

It is a very beautiful city and the tall skyscrapers are breathtaking. Japan railways as usual is also awesome here and it subways too connects to every area of this city. I visited "Universal Studios Japan", one of the popular themed park in Japan, spent a whole day there and it would say it was totally worth.

Excellent - can roam around anytime in the night.

Very friendly - language is an issue. If you need anything ask your hotel in English.

Food, sight-seeing and shopping: Just take the map where you want to go. Take the SUBWAY route map also.

Activities & things to do: Take a trip of metro - bullet train. Must see OSAKA Station and Yodobashi Umeda mall.

Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc: Just be relaxed. Take some food in case you are strict veg.

Osaka Overview

Osaka is the third largest Japanese city which is inhabited by 26, 68,113 people. Located in the Kansai region of the island of Honshu, Osaka spreads over an area of 222.30 sq. km. Earlier the city of Osaka was known as Naniwa and was the first known capital of Japan. A designated city under the Local Autonomy Law, it is the capital of Osaka prefecture.

The city is divided into two major areas Kita and Minami. Osaka has 24 wards, of which Kita-ku is the administrative centre. Osaka Bay lies to the west of the city and the other sides are surrounded by ten cities of Osaka Prefecture, except the city of Amagasaki.

Human settlement in Osaka was observed more than 10,000 years ago. Chinese culture became prevalent in Japan around 5th century A.D. During this period, Osaka became the political and cultural centre of Japan. Towards the end of the 12th century, Japan's political power fell into the hands of the warrior class. However, Sakai which is the southern part of present Osaka developed as a free city.

Osaka gradually grew as a political and economic centre of Japan after Toyotomi Hideyoshi chose the city as a base for his task of unification of Japan in 1583. Soon in the 17th century, the political centre of Japan shifted to Tokyo but Osaka kept managing the nation's economy and distribution of goods. During this period, Osaka was named as the Nation's Kitchen and the city started developing as a modern metropolis.

In 1889, government ordinance established a modern municipality in Osaka. During World War II, Osaka was devastated by the fleet of American B-29 bombers. However, the city recovered from the devastation soon and regained its status as a major industrial and cultural centre. Apart from being the economical and cultural centre of Japan, it is also the hub of marine transportation.

Famous items like instant noodles, cup noodles, instant vacuum packed meals and calculators, were first invented in Osaka. It is also the birthplace of utility knives and sweets with toys. Osaka is the first city in the world to make dual carriageway for trains and motor-vehicles. The monorail system of Osaka has been recorded in the Guinness Book of Records as the longest monorail system in the world.

Holidaymakers can plan a visit to Osaka during spring and autumn. Spring in Osaka is marked by cherry blossom, while the autumn months are famous for fall foliage. Tourists generally avoid visiting the city during typhoon season that extends from September to October.
