Ranked 1 of 38 sightseeing in Pattaya

Coral Island (Koh Lan) is situated around seven kilometres to the west of Pattaya beach. This island has some of Thailand’s most pristine beaches. Popularly known by its Thai name, Koh Larn, this island is the perfect getaway for those who are looking for a day away from the choc-a-bloc crowd of main Pattaya city. The

crystal clear water

and breathtaking sunsets make this a much visited tourist destination.

History

The spectacular island spans over four kilometers in length and two kilometres in breadth, housing two villages on it and an array of resorts on it. The island has an incredible crop of tropical rainforests that leave the senses spellbound. The highest peak on the island stands at an approximate height of 180 metres. Apart from the azure beaches, the island is mostly covered by green and heavy vegetation.

Reason to Visit

The biggest reason to visit the Coral Island would be to experience a side of Thailand that is serene and untroubled by the noise and crowds that you usually encounter there. There are around six beaches and they are all not as crowded as the other beaches in Thailand. There are various water sports you can indulge in such as speedboat riding, jet skiing, banana boat riding and parasailing. Snorkelling is also a popular activity amongst tourists. If you don’t feel adventurous enough for the water sports you can lounge on the sands and relax with a few drinks that you can buy from nearby stalls. Though there are not as many stalls as the other beaches in Pattaya, the few that are there suffice quite well.

Entry Guidelines

You can reach this tropical paradise by buying yourself a ticket on the ferry. The tickets usually cost around 30 Baht per head and it takes approximately 45 minutes to reach the island. If you don’t want to explore it on your own there are tour packages that you can book yourself on. These packages cover some of the popular places and some packages even have water sports included in them. The cost for these tour packages usually start from 500 Bahts and can go upto even 2,000 Bahts based on the kind of activities that the packages offer.

Where to Eat

The beaches lead to narrow pavements and roads that are dotted with street shops and eateries. The Island offers some of the most delicious seafood which are usually cooked with the fresh catch they bring in. There are also sea side local markets that offer fresh seafood. For the pizza lovers there is a quaint little pizza place called Pizza Mania that serve some really good food and coffee. Most restaurants offer both non-vegetarian as well as vegetarian food. There are a good few resorts too on the island that you can visit to indulge yourself in more expensive cuisines and massages.

The Island also offers accommodation, however, it’s a little more expensive than other places in Pattaya. This stunning island is a must visit if you are a beach bum, enjoy water sports and love seafood.

Heaven on Earth

Coral island or koh larn is a beautiful beach which can be reached by a speed boat from Pattaya in 1 hour. Tour has to be booked in advance which includes boat expenses, lunch on island and other optional activities like paragliding, scuba diving, snorkeling or banana boat. Water sports and activities can be booked when you reach there but you have to pay a little more. After leaving Pattaya beach, our first stop was a huge boat cum platform right in the middle of water from where paragliding can be done. It was a great experience. Next stop was another platform for scuba diving. We were given some basic instructions as pressure of water under sea is very high which can be unbearable for some people. Under sea, the water was not clear but I must say it was a very different kind of thing. Finally we reached the island. The beach was clean and water was clear. I could see people lazing on beach everywhere, lots of shops selling food and beverages. All kinds of water sports can be enjoyed there. But I was quite exhausted after paragliding and scuba diving and the heat and humidity there was unbearable for me. So I sank into the first comfy chair available and had a chilled beer to counter the heat. After some chilling, I went into the knee deep water and was surprised to feel the coolness of water. The humidity also disappeared surprisingly. Then we had lunch and left on the boat for Pattaya. To see the dark blue black water and small islands when traveling in the boat is a sight to cherish and remember.

The only real Beach near Pattaya

The Beach is just 7 km away which can be reached using speed boats or Ferry from Pier at the end of walking street. The journey takes 15- 40 minutes. Speed boats cost 500 ThB where as ferry is at 30 ThB per side. The Beach is beautiful, clean and worth swimming or fun. With lots of Shakes and eateries around, its a perfect destination for a day. Please avoid Jet skis, it's the biggest scam of Pattaya, you can enjoy para sailing, snorkeling near by.Be careful about return timings as last ferries are at 5 pm.

Coral island with clear waters.

We went to coral island for water sports. There are motor boats to take to coral island from pattaya beach. On the way to coral island there is Para sailing activity charged at 400 Baht. Underwater activity is main activity which is very good but charged at 1200 baht. In this you go 5.5 feet - 6 feet under sea. I enjoyed this activity. You will be shown coral reef, some sorts of fishes. You can touch them, feed them. Bread is provided by them to feed to fishes. Under water photo and video also done but charged at 700 baht. Then there were common activities like jet-ski, banana boat, skiing. Indian food is available at restaurant named seven star which is good. Overall nice experience.
