The Pattaya Floating Market is one of Pattaya’s attractions that showcases true Thai culture. Starting with food and all the way to the architecture, the Pattaya Floating Market is a photographer’s delight. The market represents the four regions of the Thailand culture, segregated by the regions – north, south, central and north-east.

History

The Pattaya Floating Market, also called the Four Region Market, has its history in very traditional roots. Thailand has had floating markets since anyone can remember. Canals and rivers were the primary forms of transport, making it only natural that the markets of Thailand be on water. The vendors, usually travelling by boat from city to city would come up to the river edge to sell their goods. The tradition has continued with the Pattaya Floating Market.

Each region represented in the Floating Market is distinctive and influenced by different factors. For example, the southern regions have been greatly influenced by the Malay and Muslim culture of the south and in the north-east or the Isaan region you can see bits and pieces of the Chinese, Lao and even Vietnamese culture.

Reason to Visit

The first and foremost reason to visit the Four Region Market is to get a taste of all of Thailand. The experience is a representative of the four regions of Thailand. Getting a taste of the food from all regions, to sample and compare and choose your favourite is the luxury that the Pattaya Floating Market offers on its 1,00,000 square meter area. The expansive market is best enjoyed by renting out a boat and haggling with the vendors like a local. The long tail boats, a surviving feature of the more historical floating markets, are fitted with a motor to steer for a smooth ride.

The market, though famous for its food, sells souvenirs, cultural items and other artefacts in its 114 shops. There are other entertainment attractions that are also educational. The daily show of cultural performance is another crowd puller apart from the beautiful handicrafts that tourists seem to love. To truly enjoy the Thai culture, open up your mind, feel comfortable and just experience the market as it is, sights, sounds and smells too.

Entry Guidelines

The Pattaya Floating Market was only opened to the public in 2008. There is a fee of 800 Baht for tourists to enter. To enjoy the cultural institution and to be transported to another world, renting a boat would be ideal. This would be at an additional cost. Renting a bike or a taxi is a possibility as well, where the cost is a little cheaper.

Where to Eat

Lining the rivers and the canals, there are plenty of restaurants to try out and dine at. Trying authentic Thai food from all four parts of Thailand is easy and fun at the Pattaya Floating Market. For the vegetarians travelling to Pattaya, there is plenty of vegetarian food outlets that are accessible to wherever you are. Indian food is also easily available in the numerous Indian restaurants in Pattaya or even in Jomtien.

Witness village life

Recently I had been to Pattaya with a big group of friends & we were checking things yet to be visited. Always I used to miss visiting the countryside life of Thai people. So this time we decided to explore Floating market, which is about an hours drive from Pattaya city. It is situated in a very calm & quite outskirts of city. Our guide planned for the tickets well in advance & we felt totally amused & occupied from morning till noon in this full fledged tourist attraction. This compounded floating market is built up in a vast area on a large lake & one has to walk along the wooden walk way witnessing the village life, their occupation, food habits, culture, tradition & also there are enough shops with good stock of souvenirs & eateries of different varieties of sea food, fast food & also Thai traditional food.As there is provision to observe all these by boating also, which takes us for a quick glimpse of all these activities. So overall, we enjoyed the ambience, crowd, cleanliness & meticulous planning of worth visiting tourist spot never to be missed by a leisure traveller.
