Petrin Lookout Tower

Ranked 6 of 23 sightseeing in Prague

The Petrin Lookout Tower strongly resembles the Eiffel Tower. A 60 metre high steel framework tower, it stands atop a hill, known as Petrin. Though the tower is much shorter than the Eiffel Tower, it is at a higher altitude than it.

Constructed in 1891, it served as an observation as well as a transmission tower. Petrin Hill, on which it is located, lies at an elevation of 318 metres above sea level. The funicular from Ujezd can be used to reach the hill. From the top of the tower, the Prague skyline is visible.

F. Prasil from the Czech Tourists Club's motion was responsible for constructing the tower, as a part of the Anniversary Exhibition. The sightseeing gallery of the tower that is located at a height of 53 metres can be reached by scaling 299 stairs. This gallery is covered with glass.

The structure that weighs 170 tons was made by Prvni ceskomoravska strojirna (The First Bohemian-Moravian Machine-Works) in Prague. The inspiration of the tower lies in the time when 363 members of the Club of Czech tourists went to the World Exhibition in Paris.

On viewing the Eiffel Tower, these members decided to construct a similar tower in their country. Inaugurated on 20th August 1891, the tower has an exhibition dedicated to the Czech genius, Jaro Cimrman, at the ground level.
