Ranked 4 of 23 sightseeing in Prague

The Prague Castle has served as offices of the Kings of Bohemia, Holy Roman Emperors and presidents of Czechoslovakia and the Czech Republic. According to the Guinness Book of Records, it is the biggest ancient castle in the world. The castle is 570 metres long and about 130 metres wide. Within 7 hectares of its area are located three courtyards and a number of buildings.

The precincts of the castle also house the Gothic St. Vitus Cathedral, Romanesque Basilica of St. George, a monastery and several palaces, gardens and defence towers. In the castle complex, there are several museums, including the National Gallery that houses a collection of Bohemian baroque and mannerism art.

The Castle also contains an exhibition dedicated to Czech history, Toy Museum and the picture gallery of Prague Castle, based on the collection of Rudolph II. In the courtyard of Burgrave Palace, the Summer Shakespeare Festival regularly takes place.

Founded by Prince Borivoj of the Premyslid dynasty, the castle dates from around 880 BC. The Church of Virgin Mary was the first stone building in the castle area. After the 10th century, the castle became the seat of Czech princes and later kings, and the seat of the Prague bishop.

Trams to Pohorelec, Prazsky hrad and Kralovsky letohradek enable tourists to reach the site. From Narodni trida or the Malostranska metro station, tram 22 travels to these stations.

Great architecture

Walked up the castle in the late afternoon and was overwhelmed with the view and the church on the castle. Great architecture and lovely views of the city from the top.

Beautiful architecture but very crowded

A real tourist hub it was so damn crowded, for a moment I felt I was back in India. The square near the castle offers good views of the town and some photography moments. It is also the point where the vintage car tour starts from. The castle in itself is architecturally appealing and worth spending an hour or two inside. A guide will be required to understand the history of Prague which spans many hundred years or else you are just left to admire the beauty of the castle.

Just okay place

The view of Prague from the Castle is a plus, but if you are not so much into Art or history, you might as well get a better panorama view from Petrin Hill tower. The tours inside the castle are into 3 circuits, Circuit A for 350 Kc (7 zones), Circuit B costs 250 Kc (5 zones), Circuit C for 150 Kc (3 zones). Cameras an extra 50 Kc. Washrooms (WC) cost some change, keep it handy. We took the Circuit B - and it was not such a big deal. You can enter the church for free, stand outside the enclosures and view it without taking pictures (unless you can sneakily do some without guards noticing ;). Golden Lane on the list of zones is disappointing. I bet inside of the castle would be more exciting. I wanted to check the Toy Museum, but didnt want to pay more, so didn't go in.
