Vysehrad was built in the 10th century, on a hill over the Vltava River. Within the area of the castle are located the Vysehrad Cemetery, containing the remains of many famous people from Czech history, along with the Basilica of St Peter and St Paul.

The Vysehrad Cemetery is the resting place of eminent personalities like Antonin Dvorak, Bedrich Smetana, Karel Capek and Alphonse Mucha.

Baroque remodelling led to the development of the present form of Vysehrad as a fortified residence, with brick ramparts, bastions and the Tabor and Leopold gates. Dating back to 1841, the Cihelna Brana (Brick Gate) is an Empire-style structure. The main part of the Spicka Gate dates from the Middle Ages.

Other structures that have been preserved from this age include parts of the Romanesque bridge and the ruined Gothic lookout tower, known as Libusina Lazen (Libuse's Bath).

In the second half of the 11th century, a Romanesque rotunda of St. Martin was built. The Church of St. Peter and St. Paul that dates from the 11th century is also located within the castle grounds. The church displays the Neo-Gothic style of architecture.

The site can be reached by taking line C metro and tram numbers 7, 8 or 24 to Albertov. In addition to these, tram numbers 3, 7, 17 or 16 to Vyton can also be availed for reaching the site.
