A square shaped building with a golden spire on the roof

To reach this Chimi Lhakhang one has to walk through the paddy fields and climb the mud road to the temple. Though the guide said half an hour to the temple it took us almost an hour of walking to reach the temple. The view from the temple which is on a hilltop is beautiful with the river flowing below. The Chimi Lhakhang is a square shaped building with a golden spire on the roof. The temple has many rows of prayer wheels and the exterior of the temple is embedded with slate carvings of Buddhist saints. There is a small chorten at the entrance of the temple which is believed to be the spot where the Lama subdued the demon of Dochula. Many childless families visit this temple to receive blessings by getting struck on the head with a 10 inch phallu. The temple is deeply associated to the legends of Saint Drukpa Kinley also known as the divine madman who is supposed to have imprisoned the demon of Dochula to a rock close to the temple. The temple houses a number of wooden phallus that the Lama brought from Tibet. Chimi Lhakhang is Buddhist monastery located in Punakha district of Bhutan. The monastery stands on a small hill and is said to be constructed in 1499. This monastery is also known as the temple of fertility and people from all over the world visit this place.
