Ranked 2 of 40 sightseeing in Rome

The Basilica is so named as it is the burial place of Saint Peter, one of the primary disciples of Jesus Christ. Originally constructed in 4th century AD, it was demolished and reconstructed between 1506 and 1626. Michelangelo was a chief contributor the project. He designed the main dome of the basilica and sculpted the very famous Pietà. Another ancient marvel is the Baldacchino by Gian Lorenzo Bernini. This four-poster is 96 feet tall and is carved out of solid bronze.

A fantastic monument
It was worth visiting the place I had heard from many corners. The structure was awesome and is a memento of the artwork of Michelangelo. One should visit it to fathom its beauty.

Inspiring and grand in history
The St Peter's Basilica is definitely awe inspiring in its scale and its history, and of course, if you were visiting the Vatican it would be unwise to miss it. That said it is just a Basilica after all, so depending on your interest in such sites the experience could go either ways. We spent 20 min walking around, took some pictures, and made our way out of there feeling perfectly satiated with our tourist experience.
