Fortress on a heap of jewels

Rinpung Dzong is a most iconic Dzong and is well known for Dzong architecture. The Dzong has an imposing a view. We were given to understand that Rinpung Dzong translates to 'Fortress on a heap of jewels'. The fortress is located on steep hills on the banks of Paro Chu River.

It is said that this Dzong helped to keep attacking Tibetans away from Paro valley. The Dzong was hit by earthquake in 1897 but not much damage happened. But a fire in 1907 caused severe damage to the Dzong. The front part of the Dzong houses the district administration while the courtyard in the rear houses the monk body. This is an interesting place to visit in Bhutan.

Photography is not allowed inside the Dzong.
