Basilica Di San Marco

14.3/5(2 Ratings)
Ranked 1 of 23 sightseeing in Venice
Also known as St. Mark's Basilica, it was to house important relics including the body of St. Mark the Evangelist, after it was stolen from Alexandria. With italo-byzantine architecture, the basilica has 8000 square metres of mosaics, some in gold, which makes quite an impression. It was thus rebuilt in 932 when the original was burnt down. Today it shows off its Byzantine domes, a Greek cross layout and walls made from marbles which were brought from Syria, Egypt and Palestine.

Enter the church with neatly dressed

Though the queue was very long, it moved very quickly and within half hour we could enter the cathedral. The entry was free but if you wanted to go up to the altar, you had to pay 2 Euros. No wearing straps / shorts as it is a place of worship.
