Benteng Vredeburg

Ranked 4 of 36 sightseeing in Yogyakarta

Benteng Vredeburg is a Dutch fortress that is popularly known as Vredeburg Fort. Located on the other side of Gedung Agung, this fort was built in 1765 for the protection of the Dutch ruler from the attack of the Sultan’s army.

The rectangular fort is surrounded by moats and citadels or bastions on the corners. Along with the ramparts, this kind of architecture provided ample space for soldiers to fight with the enemy for the fort itself.

The fort also has a canon from where one can get a view of the Sultan's Palace and other historical monuments around the Palace. From this point, tourists can also see the President's Palace that is also known as Gedung Agung.

Tourists can reach the fortress on foot from the municipality centre, which is located near the Benteng Vredeburg.
